Leave a commentWhen ideas were being posted for a draw to Buffalo (and it's waterfront) I had submitted an idea for a toy/play museum. I know that Rochester has the Strong museum and though haven't been there myself, have heard its not that great. We can start from the beginning and make something great, including theme restaurants, toy parades, and historic information regarding toys and play and heaven knows what else and where this can grow to. With the space at the outer harbor, this can become something huge and a vacation destination for many families from out of town. Using the outer harbor leaves the Central Wharf for development for adults with restaurants, shopping, and enjoyable outdoor space. This type of venue would bring in tourism dollars and still have enough interest for local families to enjoy. And as children are always being born, our customer base would never expire. Throw in the East Aurora connection and you really have something. Buffalo, toy town, USA
Given the fact that there were quite a few toy companies in East Aurora decades ago, I'd hate to see the 'museum' (not like any museum I've ever been to) leave the village.
Selfishly, it's also nice to be able to walk or bike there with the kids.
Maybe they can keep it as a satellite when they create their 5x bigger place in the city somewhere...
Explore & More is a great place and the summer tent site at Canalside has been a welcome addition. We were saturday regulars at the Science Spot on Elmwood until it closed, and hope that E & M can become a permanent presence in the area.
I applaud the ECHDC for integrating regional cultural organizations, such as E & M, into the programming-it really creates a win-win situation (as these organizations need exposure and, hopefully the funds the ECHDC provides, while there needs to be more to do on the Canal.)
On another note, it does amaze me that Fisher Price/Mattel keep such a low profile in the area-would be great to see them (along with Moog and other larger companies based in the 'burbs) at least have some presence in WNY's core: downtown Buffalo.
Moog runs their medical device unit out of Ethox on Seneca, near Chefs. They are moving most of their operating unit to that site. The reason many "burbs' companies (a.k.a: evil) keep a low profile is they don't like or want the spotlight and are fearful of union representation.
Good to know, on both fronts.
I agree with your comment, as well. E&M is a great interactive experience for kids. Kids love it and they learn a great deal from the experience, a win-win for parents and kids.

oh gosh Buffalo has the cutest kids...
I always thought that with Mattel here locally in East Aurora, that Buffalo was far more logical place for a nationally recognized interactive museum for play.
Im glad to see that this is taking the next step in growth and hope to see Buffalonians support it!
Such a center would not just be good for kids and not just good for Buffalo but would be good for Mattel. They already do a good deal of marketing locally....and this cement a stronger relationship identifying mattel and buffalo.
