Buffalo's Surreal Slip

Leave a commentWhen cities start beating to their own drum, strange....yes, even bizarre things happen. Get used to it, Buffalo.
I'm not sure but I think this is part of a larger installation. They have a bunch of funnels and tubes near the Snack Shack, and near the old concert stage location is...well it looks like 40 or more panels of wood fencing stacked but each corner was tied together to make a strange...I can't describe it go down and take a look in the daylight.
Keep Buffalo weird.
ok I did a little research and it's part of the UB Fluid Culture.

YES! Quirk and public art in Buffalo!! Fantastic. Looking forward to more of the installation.
I saw someone installing this on Sunday when I was down there having my picture taken in front of Clinton's Dish, which I named. Its not called the Snack Shack.
I love the Snack Shack... !
Congrats on the naming! Just read about that. Did you get to smash a bottle of Loganberry on the corner to christen it--?
It's pretty cool looking at night! I love crap like this, it adds a weird uniqueness that adds a little character to Buffalo.
I saw that last night on my way to the Sabres game. Cool!
Awesome magical installation-- I love seeing art out in the world like this. Such a perfect location. Great photos of it too!
I cannot express how great this simple and funny this is. I love it when things like this happen in Buffalo.
Has anyone seen the "dance" art on the sidewalk on Summer between elmwood and delaware on the south side? Really simple and brings a smile to my face.
More public art, please!

It's too bad we don't have guerrilla artists are architects in the City. Nothing that does damage, but makes us think differently about spaces we use everyday.
Couldn't agree with you more, Greg. I don't understand why more art on the street is not present-such as in places like Cincy, Detroit, etc. I'd like to see Buffalo/artists break out a little more.
An inspiring example of thinking outside the box springs.
thumbs up for that one.
perhaps the concept was 'floated' among other artists but they 'waved' it off.
Public art is an incredible way to engage the community and add to the city's quality of life. I'm a part of ELAB (Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo), and we're planning a forum on just this topic: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=188925647843776
It would be great to continue this conversation with all of you there!
It looks so Photoshopped! But it's real. Yay for public art.
How long before someone (or some-two) get arrested for getting it on in that bed?
they can tell the cops it's performance art.
Although I would like to see the box spring built to the canalside, this is a good start.
I believe the larger issue being overlooked is doesn't a piece like this contribute to water sprawl?
they didn't include a rain garden for the excess water... how shortsighted can one get?
I love this stuff. More, more, more... However, this reminds me of the piano that was placed on the sand bar in Florida by some high school kid. Regardless, it's fun to look at.
This is definitely part of something else and is not just a Buffalo thing. A few weeks ago there was a photo on the NYTimes website where someone had put a baby grand piano in the water somewhere near NYC. Again, it made for a great photo.
What the... did the common council approve this?
i. love. it.
most public art in my lifetime has been humorless, cold, and distancing. it has made me wildly skeptical with art's grand claims about urban revitalization.
when you drop the bombast and pointless formalism demanded by modernism, art gets to be fun again.
thanks to whoever designed this. more, please.
I love it to! Especially at night with that light on--we'll keep the light on for ya! and I expect joksters to try bedding down.
I really like that wooden wave too. The one with the upturned unbrellas, I'm not sure what that's about.

And somebody was questioning whether the hotel industry can handle all the new beds opening up in the Lafayette and Statler!
Gotta admit, though, the light-up bedside lamp really makes it an impressive stunt.
