Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Patricia Covley:
Renegade cop Cody Hoyt is called to investigate the death of his friend and AA sponsor Hank Winters. Hank has been found burned to death in his remote cabin. The evidence says that it was an accident; that Winters fell asleep after an evening of drinking and left the door open on his wood burning stove.
Hoyt doesn't believe it and begins to investigate. Hoyt's investigation points to outdoorsman Jed McCarthy. McCarthy is leading a group of tourists on a multi-day trip into the wilds of Yellowstone. Jed's son is on the trip. Quite a coincidence!
While some of Hoyt's behavior is quite outrageous (he shoots a suspect in the knee to make him talk), he is a sympathetic character. I found myself rooting for him as he traveled to the remote parts of Yellowstone. Back of Beyond is a fun, quick read - perfect for anyone looking to lose himself or herself in a mystery.
