Cross in the Park 2011
If you think this photo looks like fun, then you ain't seen nothin' yet. Cross in the Park is one solid rush of adrenaline geared towards the gearheads, mountain bikers, street racers, fixies and any other cyclist who wants to take a two-wheeled, self-propelled ride to the edge. Last year's inaugural Cross in the Park was so much fun that organizers didn't know how to top it this year... let alone pull it off. Thanks to the determination and sportsmanship of Ethan Johnson, owner of Campus Wheelworks, Delaware Park is host track once again to what team rider Justin Plinz describes as, "... only cyclocross can put you through that much pain and still put a smile on your face."
This year's cyclocross race promises to be even more grueling than last year, with new categories, beefed up entries, and more cow bells than you can shake an udder at. For more info on the race to end all races... wait, that was supposed to be last year, check out Campus

Delish! and Stumptown team up to change the face of coffee in Buffalo
Amherst Street is coming alive with the smells of fresh brewed coffee, desserts and pastries. Delish! recently opened its doors (see history), allowing visitors to enter into a world filled with all sorts of visual delights. The transformation of the space is incredible - if you didn't know any better you might think that the pastry shop had been there for decades. That's not the case though. Owner Deb Clarke (photo right) has put in countless work

Painting for Preservation Visits Saint Adalbert Basilica

What might be the last regular Sunday mass at Saint Adalbert Basilica was held September 11 at the 125-years-strong East Side parish.  Over 350 attended the 125th Anniversary celebration held afterwards.  A typical Sunday mass brings well-over 100 parishioners.  With these numbers, many out-of-town supporters and a well-kept religious campus that also provides some rental income, the Catholic Diocese's order to close the church makes little sense.

Medicinal Gardens @ The Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens is launching a fascinating scientific and medical initiative with the help of D'Youville College School of Pharmacy and Mercy Hospital of Buffalo (part of Catholic Health). The task is to create indoor and outdoor medicinal gardens so that the public can learn about the different characteristics of medicinal plants that have been used for health purposes since the times of early mankind. To this day plants continue to be studied in hopes that the results might lead to new discoveries. At the same time, the following showcased

Preparing for mural #1
On August 30 I wrote a post about 'Reviving the mural movement' featuring photographer Max Collins and his goal to bring larger than life photographic murals to Buffalo. Two days later Max and I sat down with the owner of Jim's SteakOut and the owners of the Elmwood building (seen here) to discuss the possibility of installing a mural on a wall that had begun to deteriorate. The old Steve Brouse mural had seen better days and the wall needed to be sealed and primed. By the end of the meeting, a decision was made

Inaugural St. Stan’s Polka ‘Squeezefest’
We've got every other fest, so why not a Squeezefest? As long as there is a Polka Hall of Fame, we might as well take full advantage of it. Oh yeah... apparently there's a Polka Hall of Fame. Get ready to grind (can you grind when dancing to polka?) to traditional polka beats as they are played by some of the most notorious polka musicians in the nation. Infamous players have come together to form Full Circle, a band that specializes in recreating historic polka tunes from the 50s, 60s and 70s. The Buffalo Concertina Allstars will also be on hand as the inaugural Squeezefest kicks off on October

There’s no place like Buffalo in NFL
This morning Jennifer Nalbone sent me a link to a Yahoo! Sports article written by Les Carpenter that I feel paints the perfect picture of Buffalo as a sports town. The writer's heartfelt sentiments ring true, not once or twice during the read, but throughout the entire piece. Les has managed to capture a lifestyle image that any Buffalo Bills' fan can relate to. If you've lived in Buffalo for any considerable amount of time, you'll be able to identify with any number of his reflections and points, especially

Restoration Work Underway on Oracle Charter School Mansion

Oracle Charter School, which is housed in the Goodyear mansion at 888 Delaware Avenue, has begun restoration work on the historic home.  Thanks to a $223,664 Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) Grant Award from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, work is well underway on restoration of the school's steel main entrance doors, wooden doors and windows, and the roof of its adjoining carriage house. The carriage house roof work, which began in August, has been completed. The restoration of the windows and doors is scheduled for completion in December 2011.

CRAZY FOR YOU - MARAT/SADE
MARAT/SADE by Peter Weiss, directed for SUBVERSIVE THEATRE by Kurt Schneiderman:
MARAT/SADE is an epic theatre piece. A play within a play, it is based on historical events. The Marquis de Sade (yes, that Marquis de Sade) was a patient at the Insane Asylum of Charenten in 1808, and had been an inmate there for many years. At Charenten, the Marquis produced many plays enacted by the inmates, all allowed in the name of progressive therapy and performed under the watchful eye of the hospital director, Monsieur Etienne Coulmier.

Buffalo Harbor Oktoberfest
Continuing on with our celebration of fall, food and beer, Canalside is getting into the act this weekend as it hosts Buffalo Harbor Oktoberfest on October 1. So far that's our third Oktoberfest option that we've posted, and there are one or two more yet to come. Organizers of the Buffalo Harbor event include the German American Musicians Association (GAM) and Edelweiss of Buffalo. That combo alone insures that there will be plenty of authentic food, music dancing and beer. "We are excited to bring Oktoberfest to Canalside," said Melanie Hachten, spokeswoman for the GAM. "Combining talents,

Buffalo Food Truck Petition: Help Fight the Good Fight
As you know, the food trucks of Buffalo are under attack. While Lloyd and Roaming Buffalo and Whole Hog have made countless fans by serving quality food, they've had to do so in a regulatory environment that did not contemplate food trucks. The City of Buffalo laws have to be changed to accommodate the relatively new food truck craze and the battle is on to

Bless your Pet
Pets are a blessing to many of us.  Lots of them enjoy a life free of anxiety, full of naps and play with the people they love, and we could conclude that they are already blessed.  That said, the Christian church, when it annually remembers St. Francis of Assisi, often pauses to also remember one of his loves: animals.

Lafayette Church would like to invite you to have your pet blessed this Sunday, October 2,

Steel is rising for the new University at Buffalo Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) on Ellicott Street just south of Tupper Goodell.  The $46 million, four-story building will connect to the Downtown Gateway complex, the former M. Wile factory.

The new EOC building will replace its current location at 465 Washington Street and allow the EOC to significantly expand its services, which include programming in remedial and academic preparation, as well as specific job training programs in allied health, life sciences,

My Favorite Buildings: Just Plain Urban Goodness
I have not highlighted any of my favorite buildings for a while so I thought I would get back into it with this beauty at the corner of Allen and Delaware.  One of the reasons I have done this "favorites" series over the years has been to shine a light on some of the countless great but unheralded buildings throughout Buffalo.  Too much focus is given to the big guys like City Hall or the houses of Frank Lloyd Wright with little attention to the importance of the everyday buildings which ultimately are much more important to making up a rich and healthy urban city. Buffalo's architectural
