A Benefit Concert for Historic Preservation

A Benefit Concert for Historic Preservation
We've all asked the question, "How do we help save our churches from imminent doom, as more and more congregations are depleted and doors are shut?" Just thinking of the cost of upkeep - preventative maintenance and heating the structure - is enough to make one shudder. Trying to keep up with the McMega churches (you know, the sprawling malls with crosses above the revolving doors) in a world where air conditioning is king and a projection screens are the norm (and that's in church!), can be a bit despairing.

It wasn't long ago when Reverend Drew posed a question that asked what he should do with his own church tower (see here). As Reverend Drew still ponders his task at hand, First Presbyterian Church (First Pres) on Symphony Circle has been undergoing a similar plight. The tower is also in need of major repairs - a monumental lift that is an ongoing financial burden on the church. What are the steps that need to be taken in order to help out these magnificent structures? Well, first and foremost, money needs to be raised. But with smaller congregations to pull the weight, the churches must rely on different funding sources, many of which can be tough to identify. Where are these funding sources? Who will come to the rescue?

There is one partnership that has been formed, which will greatly benefit First Pres. On September 26, Buffalo Philharmonic musicians will be performing a benefit concert at First Pres, with proceeds going directly towards preserving the church. There will be a silent auction at 6pm and a concert starting at 8pm in The Sanctuary within the church. If you've always wanted to support one of our iconic churches, and you're a big fan of world class music, then this is a concert that should not be missed. Here are the details:

May I suggest that the concert recruit someone who knows about saving Buffalo churches, Ani DiFranco?

You mean get the City of Buffalo to pay for the exterior stabilization and rehab...The City paid a significant amount of money at Asbury Methodist, aka Babeville...Don't think that's going to happen at First Pres.

Who they should talk to is the people at Corpus Christi...Since receiving National Landmark Status they have raised about $1,000,000 in private and matching grants.

agreed. anybody with ani difranco's money can save a threatened building and we are all grateful that she did.

but just because someone lacks her means doesn't mean that they have no clue how to save their threatened building, it just means that they lack her means. first pres is a shrinking congregation without deep pockets. so props to the bpo for lending a hand to a neighbor.

Many cities have foundations specifically created to fund restoration projects. I just got back from New Bedford, Mass, where a group called "WHALE" fund raises and saves historic buildings that are about to be demolished:

This model could work here.

PBN was/is supposed to launch a Fund....don't know the status. We need it, desperately.

Preservation Buffalo Niagara is almost always a day late and a dollar short. They put in the effort years after it is needed and do very little to preserve Buffalo.

How long have we been talking about a list of endangered buildings? How long have we been looking for direction and a master plan for preservation in Buffalo? The only progress on these fronts have been made outside of the PBN offices and management.

It is time that someone audited and cleaned up Preservation Buffalo Niagara. All they have done is consolidate the issues and bureaucracy of the disjointed preservation boards that were combined under this new banner.

Dead on Bobbycat. Everyone talks about lack of leadership at levels but nobody ever mentions the one organization completely devoid of effective leadership: PBN.

People interested in measuring PBN's work since it formed three years ago might want to look at this:

I fail to see how this furthers their cause. Their vision statement lacks vision and direction, and most of their accomplishments over the past 3+ years have been relatively minor and more ceremonial than anything else.

I encourage everyone to read it for themselves and determine if an awards banquet, joining a national organization, and reviewing a handful of sites in 3 years would qualify as exemplary progress. The only thing that they have been successful with is fundraising through their historic tours that charge $14 - $20 per head.

They seem to work behind the scenes a lot which, if balanced with Tim Tielman's "in-you-face" activism, is ok. Theirs is more of a methodical, long-term and strategic approach. However, you also need a force that chains itself to a church....which is Tim.

If you check their website, you will see that most of their tours cost $10 for adults.

no one asked, but here's my personal report card for pbn.

getting shpo to reverse itself on willert park: very nice
endorsing the sale of statler to croce: good but about as courageous as endorsing a cure for cancer
conducting various neighborhood surveys: good
serving as the local partner for the national trust conference: extremely good

silence on proposed demo of broadway barns: bad
approving the sacrifice of st. gerard's: bad
silence on the loss of st. barbara's: extremely bad
silence on demo of glf grain elevator: extremely bad
opposition to landmarking heath house & davidson house: national-embarrassment-level bad

bottom line: unfortunate waste of the talent and resources at their disposal. we have lost about as many worthwhile buildings on their watch as we would have without a "professional" preservation organization in town.

my recommendation: drop 'preservation' from the name, since they are too timid to actually fight for anything other than the peace bridge neighborhood. rebrand themselves as an architectural enjoyment society. tada! no more false advertising. if you like well-produced award luncheons, knowledgeable walking tours, a handsome newsletter, and the occasional wooden-window-repair workshop, keep donating to pbn.

but if you want to see someone go toe to toe with demolitionists and win one once in a while, donate to campaign for greater buffalo.

Preservation Buffalo/Niagara is not a Preservation Group

The Buffalo Preservation Board prepared the nomination form and voted in favor of landmarking Frank Lloyd Wright's Davidson House and Heath House...Harvey Garrett, Preservation Buffalo/Niagara's representative on the Board abstained and Catherine Schweitzer the head of PBN opposed their landmarking at a Common Council Hearing....calling the action "FORCED LANDMARKING"
They are a nice social group, not a Preservation Group!
