The Olmsted Conservancy's 9th annual Party for the Parks fundraiser (Friday, September 16) looks like it's attracting quite an interesting line-up of characters. With the theme being British Invasion and all, the organizers are teaming up with a variety of Buffalo Brits, the likes that have never been assembled before. PfP is breaking out the buntings, the bangers and mash, the red white and blue Jello shots and the bubble guns. Guests include Buffalo's British Car Club, the Fashion Maniac team, the Starchildren Moped Club, the Buffalo Jugglers, Pyromancy and the Queen City Roller Girls. There will be
cheese rolling, Wimbledon-themed 'beach' tennis, a cricket expo and guest appearances from the Buffalo Quidditch team.
Party-goers can look forward to smashing music by Buffalo's British Invasion band
The Ifs, along with the young local Brit-pop group
InLite - a combo music line-up that is sure to make plenty of waves as they play on a stage set over Gala Waters (Hoyt Lake). Look for DJ Cutler spinning, the roller girls rolling, crew teams rowing (actually rowing on the lake), bubble guns blowing, geezers
gurning, top spinners spinning and the Queen waving proper all the while. Grab a mod outfit and get ready to pull shapes with your favorite bird or bloke. Sip a Pimm's and watch the fireworks as they blast out over the lake. And between now and September 16, be sure to rent Quadrophenia - a movie that is sure to get you in the proper mood.
Magnolia Events and Catering, the city's newest culinary tag team of Jason Davidson and Mike Shatzel, will be slinging British ales and savoury - this is the same team that will soon be opening the bistro at the Naval Museum at Canalside. For those feeling a mite peckish, high tea will include bangers and mash, apple pie and sharp cheddar cheese, veggie shepherd's pie, Welsh rarebit, fish and chips, and berry trifle.
The British are coming this September. This will be an invasion to remember.
