Ship Canal Commons: Another Waterfront Destination

Ship Canal Commons: Another Waterfront Destination
Upon any mention of the city's Union Ship Canal, most people have no idea what you're talking about. That will soon change. The parkland surrounding the canal is finally taking shape, and I must say that it's looking like this inlet will soon become a major destination for cyclists, runners and anyone else who enjoys the waterfront (see plans). The Union Ship Canal, or Ship Canal Commons as it is being branded, is the final Outer Harbor destination within city limits. It is located at the furthermost point of Tifft Nature Preserve and is home to an industrial office and manufacturing park. Despite the industrial nature of the land, the public park that surrounds the canal is loaded with features that you might not expect to find, including gigantic mounds of grass that mimic the old coal piles that were once piled along the water's edge (lead image).

The lamp standards are in place, the perimeter stone walkways and railings are installed, tree plantings have begun, roadways and roundabouts are ready, even the metal Union Ship Canal entrance sign has been positioned. The vista from the top of the grass mounds (with stone walking paths) is incredible. This is what a real canalway is supposed to look like. There's plenty of room for small craft boating activity, and a canoe and kayak launch is planned. A pedestrian bridge is situated at the lake entrance and a second bridge is on the way. It looks like much of the planting will one day obscure various industrial boxes at Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park, which will be of great aesthetic benefit.

As I mentioned, this is the city's lakeside bike path terminus that culminates with a sweeping route along the perimeter of the canal. Once open, cyclists will have plenty to see and do at various locations along the entire route.

Way to ignore all of the other improvements that were mentioned.

This looks really nice-will be a great place to bike. I believe the next structure over is the beautiful (but, dying by neglect) Bethlehem Admin Building. Here the battle cry, obstructionists!

I hope the nice plantings here get watered regularly until established unlike the Fuhrmann Blvd. section, oh yes, I'm sorry that was caused by harsh weather and salt (did you just see that pig fly by).

All well and good, but we need to start think bigger for the outer harber to truly be a destination. i.e.:

Nice to see all this stuff getting done, when I first saw it it was just blueprints.

Yeah, a disconnected, out of the way, daylight-only, open area surrounded by decaying industrial uses with contaminated soils. Awesome.

Let's have a little clarity, this wasn't some grand scheme to put this "park" here as some smallpiece in a large puzzle. This place is the former Hanna Furnace/Union Ship Canal site that was contaminated with heavy metals, VOCs and cyanide after years of industrial uses. So this was a mandated cleanup started I believe in the 1990s.

Put it another way, had this not been a remiedation site, it never would have happened because frankly, it makes no sense (and proven by the minimalist approach to "renewal") given its location. Typically, you build open space and parks within walking distance of the urban area.

Typically you build open space and parks within walking distance of the urban area? I guess we need to close down Letchworth State Park! Woodlawn Beach? Hasta la vista!

I am sure this was (is) a contaminated, industrial site in need of remediation-Buffalo is littered with those, unfortunately. So, what should have been done in your book? Left just to sit, not beautify?

I see it as net positive-people will visit it, if "only in the day", it extends the bike path, etc. I am not sure why this is a negative thing.

Yea Falling, you go-get-um! We cant have people going around cleaning up brown fields and turning them into usable space all willie nillie like this! Shame on everyone that made this happen!

Have you been there? It's not disconnected at all. It's a short walk from the Small Boat Harbor & Doug's Dive along the bike path.

If the result of a mandatory brown field clean up is this park then what is the problem? Who cares what the reason is?

Sounds cool, can't wait to check it out! I love River Fest Park and everything they are doing down there.

They did a nice job converting that pretty-much unusable land into parkland. Well done!

We drove down there the other day and it's far from being inaccessible from Downtown. The bike/walking path stretches the entire length of the shore and especially from Doug's Dive this section is easily accessible. This is going to be a fantastic place to bike/walk/run etc. especially in a year or two when the greenery gets a chance to grow in and the construction is completed.

There are mounds of magnificent marble, with history, just sitting in the Pier's old, ghostly parking lot. Could we not have it relocated to Union Ship Canal to be utilized as sitting stones? The big sections of columns could even have little plaques screwed into them stating the significance / history of them. I'd even be willing to raise transportation fees and money for the plaques. It is a shame that they are not displayed in a location for people to admire their beauty!!

I live near the Outer Harbor / Gallagher Beach... I am ecstatic that I can ride my bike into the city via paths now! In addition, I can jump on the ferry with my bike... how cool is that!!?? The round-abouts, two-way roads, ample places to park, benches, lighting, revamped Times Beach, bridge-ways that lead you into the Old First Ward, docs to launch your kayaks, places for families to have picnics, restaurant to enjoy a bev by the water, glorious view of the old grain elevator with innovative turbines, places to fish, walk-ways to go with significant others, remote locations to be alone with your thoughts, flowers and greenery to make it tranquil, green-space to enjoy a football game, signage for mini-history lessons... A PLACE TO ENJOY BFLO'S SUMMERS! All we need now are some more local businesses... but, in due time... acting impulsively leads to poor decision making! Keep up the GREAT revitalization PROCESS!

I am cynical but buffalofalling makes me sound like Tony Robbins. I think this is pretty cool relative to what it was 10 yrs ago.
