Sweet Summer Dreams of Dolci

Sweet Summer Dreams of Dolci
On a sweltering hot day, there's really nothing like having Dolci back up and running (see back story). After a brief trip to the Co-op, it was time to cool down and it was my luck that Dolci was open for business, though in limited capacity. Today was the perfect day to sit outside on the patio eating gelato. After scoping out the numerous flavors (that need to be labeled) the Concord Grape looked to be the most refreshing, plus it turned out to be a regional flavor. The galato special of the day included a cookie, which was a good deal, but I was more interested in trying out the Concord Grape gelato solo - even a cookie sounded too hot.

I recently discovered that Dolci makes vegan cakes, cupcakes and cookies (see here). There's even a vegan gelato. And come fall, Dolci's upper floor will be transformed into a cafe with bar seating at the windows that look out onto Elmwood. Once again, it looks as if lack of permits from The City may be holding up progress on this front, which is unfortunate because these long periods of waiting tend to cost a business a lot of money, especially during the critical time of opening. At least Dolci got its doors open in order to sell gelato during these hot summer days... let's hope that The City can straighten out the permit process by fall so that Dolci can start to crank out the coffee drinks, soups, breads and sandwiches. In the meantime, here's a list of the rotating gelato flavors:

I'm worried about this space and Dolci. Dolci for years seems to be struggling on a shoestring and barely making it. While I'm happy to see them return to the Elmwood strip, they need to step it up a notch and get merchandising and offerings in better order. The store always looks closed or like they are going out of business, and that's no way to start off.

We have some great offerings on Elmwood and Dolci needs to step up to be part of the pack. It's not only about offering a good product, it's about how that product is offered. Check out the success of O3 -- good stuff, good presentation, good environment. Dolci needs to take a cue from shops like that.

Don't start picking on Dolci, the cult members will come after you. Your comments are nonetheless 100% correct.

So much for KeepItSimple's anonymity. BR Paparazzi got me in these pictures. What I miss from living in Miami is the Italian gelaterias. Dolci is a lifesaver. The gelato is out front and visible in the new digs. The free cookie is a nice touch, with portions big enough to share. Sorbets too, by the way. The patio's my new best place for people watching.
