Outer Harbor Fest!

Outer Harbor Fest!
Gone are the days of Shooters and The Pier at the Outer Harbor - a place where many of us partied until the wee hours of the morning each and every summer. Since The Pier was demolished, this section of the Outer Harbor, controlled by the NFTA, has slowly been converted into bike trails and meadows... a place that is actually quite peaceful with incredible vistas of the waterfront. Starting Thursday July 28th and running to Sunday July 31st, Jason Riggs (photo) and Earl Springborn are planning on bringing this sleepy waterfront plot of land back to life.

For four days in July, the Outer Harbor will be converted into something that resembles Coney Island, featuring a gigantic beer garden, carnival rides, waterside picnic pavilion tents, floating docks, a music stage and massive fireworks displays. Two dozen tribute bands (along with some local favorites such as Free Henry!) will be featured along with BBQ pits, taco stands and wood-fired pizza, hamburger and hot dog huts. With the help of the NFTA, Jason and Earl have spent weeks cleaning up the site and installing docks in preparation for Outer Harbor Fest. "The NFTA is installing 300' of temporary docks," Jason told me. "In order to make the event boat friendly. We're planning on making the event a stop for the water taxi (see map), as well as recreational boaters. Last summer we were out on our boats looking for something to do. It was then that we decided that we would bring the family-friendly party to the waterfront. This parcel of land fits six times the amount of people as the Inner Harbor. There's room for a grass family picnic area, music fans, beer lovers, sun worshipers, boaters and everyone who loves a good beer bash."

Partial proceeds from the $5 admission charge will go towards the Buffalo Boys and Girls Club. The money collected by the NFTA from the site rental will go towards continued improvements, in hopes that more events will take place in the future. Jason and Earl are planning a series of different events that will utilize this same parcel of land at the Outer Harbor, including a concert series in on September 10th called Summer's Last Bash (featuring national music acts).  Free parking is available along Fuhrmann Boulevard with additional paid parking the event as well as at Terminals A and B (free shuttle). Classic cars and motorcycles park for free, and boaters can reserve dock space by calling ahead to this number: 866-806-3917.

"We're transforming this land from a dumping zone to a party zone". -Jason Riggs

See Facebook for details. No coolers allowed at the festival - plenty of food and refreshments available for sale at affordable family-friendly prices. Bring your Hula Hoop, beach towels, beach chairs, a Frisbee etc.

I was hoping that they'd have an event like this... I think I may have actually recommended it on my site! Kudos for making it happen! People need to be exposed to that fact that it is ONE lake, ONE waterfront, ONE city... it's ok to cut through the Old First Ward or drive over the skyway.... it's not like you'll end up in Kansas... You're still in Buffalo and you'll be able to enjoy one of our greatest assets! I can't wait for the event!

The only things I wish they were having to make this a true Party Zone 1. Tribute bands 2. RV access.

Aren't we getting carried away with "Fests?" The saturation point has been reached for mass gatherings with lousy beer, so-so bands, and garbage strewn all over the place.

So don't go, then there will definitely be less garbage strewn all over the place.

Yes, wasn’t it Willis McGahee who said there is too much to do in Buffalo?

I've had people from Rochester and Syracuse marvel at all the festivals and free music that goes on here. I think it's one of the greatest assets we have. After a long winter we celebrate our great summers. I wish the summer was longer so I had enough time to do everything I want to do...not a bad problem..better than the alternative.

If we really were getting "carried away" then every festival would be ghost towns... I am pretty sure that I could hardly walk at Italian Fest last week. People must like them, and in all due respect, if you are not a festival go-er, then don't go! A festival is what the Outer Harbor needs to get people down there to see, first-hand, all of the changes that have occurred. Also, it is a great way to expose local business, artists, musicians, etc. Buffalo is a grand city, let't show-case it!

Looks like the perfect lot for a NEW BILLS STADIUM!!

On a sidenote, the skyway is damn ugly

I couldnt agree more. The Bills will have a new stadium on the Outer Harbor by 2020.

Put the stadium on Buffalo River among the grain elevators. No sense ruining the waterfront.

Then we would have a lawsuit about the stadium ruining the historic environment. Plus, the area could not support pumping 80-100 thousand visitors into, and out of it, in a timely manner.

Pulling off first-time events (especially of this size) are very difficult. Actually, it's not difficult, but making money is. There's really no elements of this event that are compelling...sounds like your local carnival, but down on the water.

I wonder if this area would be able to support a relocated Erie County fairgrounds. It would make perfect sense to move into city limitis since Buffalo is the county seat. Having it here would also provide easier access for many who normally wouldn't be able to make the trip to the south towns every summer.

Something permanent here would really boost the outer harbor area,

Very cool. I may drive my SUV from my suburban development into the big dirty crime infested city for this one.

Wish there was something that differentiated this from a standard carnival...oh well, can't really complain though

Ultimately I think this portion of land would eb the perfect spot for some type of ampitheater. Many shows have been by our area due to lack amenities for performers offered by Darien Lake PAC. Something like Stage AE in Pittburgh, Jacobs Pavillion in Cleveland, or Molson Amphitheater in Toronto would be excellent.

Point of info: when/why were the Piers demo'd? Just curious..

Score: -2 ( 6 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Best info I found was that the Piers went out of business in 05 and stayed up until 2007 when it was demo'd to allow for further development.

Not surprised at all by the ensuing comments, Buffalo has no shortage of the crass riff-raff that attend these hillbilly jamborees. If there was a Casey Anthony fundraiser on the old Bethlehem Steel grounds hundreds of Buffalonians would show up as long as there was Blue Light & the Jamie Moses Band.

I would love for this to turn into the size at notoriety of Lollapalooza some day. We need a nationally recognized music festival here and that is the perfect venue.

DOWN WITH DARIEN LAKE!!!

I agree, it's kind of sad how big of a deal the Foo Fighters coming to Buffalo is, they should just be one of many bands passing through.

I remember when the Warped Tour was at LaSalle Park, how awesome was that! I'd be happy with something like that, doesn't have to start epic like Coachella. But at least 1 headliner would be cool.

I hope this does well, but as someone that doesn't like to drink a lot and has no kids there really isn't much draw for me.

Maybe next year try schedule some Red Bull racing events or something besides beer and non-original music. I'm not saying this to be a downer, just wish it was more interesting.

IT wouldn"t be easy to fly in the erie on-shore winds but how cool would it be to have an Red Bull Air Race over the lake here in Buffalo!!!

I would absolutely LOVE to have a music festival down there where national acts play. However, the city isn't prepared for something of that magnitude. Obviously, we wouldn't be competing with Coachella or Bonnaroo, due to the camping and the destinantion style festival that those are. Lollapalooza works due to its downtown nature and the PLETHORA of hotels walking distance from the venue.

Without hotels walking distance it would have to be a small one day festival. Parking would not be able to accomodate 30k-40k people, which would be a small festival. For it to succeed it would have to be a festival similar to Pitchfork Festival in Chicago. Parking and accomodations are the major issue.

The place where I've always thought a destinantion festival could work is Griffis Park out near Ellicottville. It'd be the perfect location for a Bonnaroo/Camp Bisco style festival.

Gearbm95...I agree. For years, I thought a seated waterfront veune, maybe 10,000 capacity, would be great at the old Shooter's site. Make it multi-demensional, so you could have big and small shows there.

As for the Griffis Sculpture Park...wonderful concerts up there in the early 1990's...10,000 Maniacs, The "Canadian Invasion."

Another indictment of the NFTA, who has controlled this land for decades, with no idea what to do with it.
Just get out of the way and let visionaries have a try.

LI2Northpark- your comments are just as idiotic.

Someone noted Darien Lake, I cannot believe that no one has mentioned the development of something to take Darien Lake's place as a venue. It has never made sense driving all the way there for a show.

how about these guys: Landsharks Band or something Similar? next year?

there hasn't been that many shows in Buffalo pertaining to Jimmy Buffet

I was excited to go to this event but was deeply disappointed when I visited this afternoon. $5 to park. Then $5 to enter. And what was going on? Carnie rides for little kids and a band playing to a "crowd" of 10 people. Basically I paid a $10 cover charge to go to a festival that paled in comparison to any garden variety summer festival in WNY.

In addition, I know the money for parking went to a good cause. But if they are going to charge for parking, providing a parking lot that isn't so deeply rutted that I was genuinely worried about doing damage to my car doesn't seem too much to ask.

In my opinion, a very poor execution of a good idea.
