Waterfront Happenings

Waterfront Happenings
Saturday turned out to be a stellar day for activities along Buffalo's waterfront. The Erie Basin Marina was the beneficiary of having Steve's Clams open and conducting a steady business. While seafood lovers enjoyed their clams casino, ocean kayaks headed out from the Inner Harbor thanks to an increased selection of personal water crafts offered at BFLO Harbor Kayak. I would imagine that by this time next year, kayak adventurers will be able to pull up directly to the Buffalo lighthouse and explore the previously out-of-bounds Outer Harbor property.

Not far from Steve's Clams, a significant new American flag flew over the grounds of the military park and memorials. A gift from the Rotary Club of Buffalo, the city's largest flag and flagpole greeted visitors as they passed by. While Erie Basin Marina basked in its patriotic glory, the Inner Harbor played host to the Great Lakes Experience Festival. If you were there, then you may have witnessed the festival's mascot, a fish, playing tambourine on stage with the band Free Henry! as the band jammed away to a song by, you guessed it, Phish. All weekend long the food trucks set up at each event, giving festival-goers the chance to try out R&R's, The Whole Hog and Lloyd Taco Truck - having these mobile culinary units around is certainly a slice of hog heaven.

Just down the path from the Inner Harbor, River Fest Park was busy attracting both boaters and landlubbers. The captain of the Buffalo Marine Construction barge had rigged the craft to accommodate a few visitors interested in partaking in food and drink - in order to get the barge guests were required to walk 'the plank'... not everyone made it on board without falling into the 'drink'. Members of the 'The Most Creative Seaworthy Vessel' made a valiant attempt at capturing grand prize at the river regatta, but fell just short as Cooks snagged first prize (next year guys!). It was nice to see the Washington tugboat tied up alongside the park, as the White Electra (Buffalo Maritime Center) gave rides to guests up and down the Buffalo River. These were just a handful of waterfront highlights from Saturday afternoon. Get out there and enjoy another sunny day at whichever harbor or waterfront destination that you choose!

This was a real cool and fun weekend on the lake. Great food, great weather and a great new park!

For a waterfront that has "nothing to do" there sure were a lot of people there today, from the Marina all the way down to River Fest Park. Which, by the way, is awesome (River Fest Park that is). Kudos to Peg for sticking it out and getting that place developed!

Today was a beautiful day to be out on the water or on the waterfront.

Can anyone guesstimate how many people were there?

The Buffalo Hiking Group led a Historic tour around the OFW and ended with a walk around Perot and Marine A Elevators with 'Swannie' Jim. Thanks Jim and Chuck, for the tour.

Having 2 festivals so close was awesome, and will get nicer once the path makes the connection. Hope some kind of crosswalk is put on Michigan right before the bridge. When I walked between the 2 I must have passed 100 people, either on bikes or walking between the 2 Festivals, and the walk only takes about 10 minutes.

As far as a guesstimate for the Festivals it's hard to say because it covered a lot of space, but I must have saw hundreds if not a thousand or more people actually in the water. Kayaks, large boats, small boats, old boats, custom boats, and weird new boats. It was amazing seeing so many people enjoy the water.

Why does the Erie Basin Marina always seem to have a disproportionate number of toothless people who look like they just stepped out of a Dickens' dregs of humanity novel? Regardless, it looks like the waterfront is going to move forward incrementally, progress is progress. Also, whenever I'm down there I thank the powers that be that there is no "Bass Pro Coming Soon" sign stuck in the mud.

I have been down to the waterfront a few times this year and it truly is a beautiful place in the summer months.

What frustrates me is with all the money being spent, there is still NOTHING to do!!!

Where is the shopping? What will attract people? Why are there no cafes, restaurants or coffee shops, stores selling memorabilia?

Our waterfront has the look and feel of Faneuil Hall in Boston....there are no street performers, nothing? Why?
