Slide Show: Pride Raises A Flag @ The Inner Harbor

Slide Show: Pride Raises A Flag @ The Inner Harbor
When I first heard that the Pride Festival was moving down to the Inner Harbor, I wasn't quite sure if the idea would fly. After all, the post-parade festivities had taken place at Bidwell Parkway for many years. Festivals should be sprinkled throughout the city, not just at one central location... or so I thought. After witnessing the parade, which seemed a bit longer than usual (maybe due to the great weather), we headed down to the waterfront and by the time we arrived the party was in full swing.

What I liked most about the waterfront setting was the walk from the Erie Basin Marina to the Pride Festival site at the Commercial Wharf. There was activity everywhere - young, old, black, white, gay, straight - the place was hopping before we even reached the stage and the beer tent (with full bar). As we approached the tent, a large sail from a sailboat could be seen passing behind a throng of revelers giving the venue a beach-side vibe. As much as the Bidwell scene was fun to witness in previous years, it was nothing like what we encountered this year.

Gone were the smell of Porta-Johns trapped between two roadways on Bidwell Parkway. Gone were the boundaries. Gone were the neighbors who never wanted to see the festival on what they consider their front lawn. Instead, there was an overwhelming feeling that if you were in attendance, then you were meant to be there... almost as if the waterfront destination had been a journey for festival-goers. There were lawns to sit down on and boats to watch. There was a soft breeze coming off the lake with an unobscured view of the sun over the water. The crowd was diverse and people were happy strolling, sitting, dancing, listening and talking. People took the Metro Rail and didn't complain about lack of parking. If you were LGBT or a friend of LGBT, it was a triumphant moment to see the masses decked out in every color imaginable along the water's edge.

I have a feeling that next year the organizers are going to need a bigger tent. As for the parade, please bring back some of the previous years' Buffalo Bears floats!!!!

I can't wait to attend more events at the Central Wharf this summer - especially as more amenities become available. I can only imagine how the passive beach and playground, along with the extension of the wharf will play out in years to come. Hopefully some of the long lines for food will be alleviated as more permanent food options become available. All in all, I think that this Pride event signaled not only pride for the LGBT community, but also for the direction that our waterfront is heading.

I agree, it was great seeing so many people down by the water, but also keeping the celebration citywide. As much as I'd love a central area for festivals, the parent neighborhoods shouldn't be forgotten. This was a well done weekend, even with the wonky weather.

Imagine seeing so many people at the waterfront every weekend. This is what we should be aiming for when it comes to canalside... hundreds or thousands of people walking around. Now let's build something for them to do.

Let's bring Juneteenth to Canalside next year!!!

not to knock bidwell park for events, but canalside really does seem to be a perfect location. i wonder if they would ever consider moving taste of buffalo to the watefront in furture years as well......there's still the same acess to metro rail and it would save from having to shut down delaware

Bidwell ParkWAY (not 'Park') is a terrible place for events and mud-making "farmer's markets" - but that's to be expected, because it was never intended to be anything but a lawn/tree place- and nerds like me who think such places should be "quietly enjoyed" are rare. Anyway ... going Downtown from there was a good idea for a change - everyone around here thought: "Go have your party without blocking our streets, for a change".

Have you ever seen a 250-lb drag queen in heels on wet grass trying to navigate a mine field of dog droppings? Bidwell was a horrible place to have a large-scale event of any sort. Especially one like this if the neighbors truly felt that way.

Have been to the last 6 pride festivals since my moving to Buffalo and have to say this was the best (for me). I loved the open feeling as opposed to being on a block. And not sure if the crowds seemed bigger or were bigger because of the location and weather but it was great. Also heard from many a coworker that they actually checked it out this year cause they were already at the waterfront to enjoy the nice day and wandered over to the festival. They would not have participated if it had been at Bidwell.
Only negative was not enough food vendors and double the size of the beer tent next year.
But loved it!!!!!

A great day..First the parade in front of TORO (Faherty's with its cool garage doors didn't bother to open and really lost out in a big way) then afterward down to the Waterfront for a great party. So many people and what a Waterfront should feel like. I spoke with a 23 year old woman who had never been to the waterfront and she has lived her whole life in Buffalo! She was amazed most by the battleships that I have always taken for granted. Imagine that? The party tent was pouring some strong drinks (ala gay bar style I have to say). I really like the Bidwell area but I can't imagine PRIDE going back there after what I saw on Sunday. The Waterfront is the right place to be. I have to say that I was aghast at the condition of the Auditorium Metrorail station. Perhaps it's not long-lived but jeez a coat of paint on those colorful upright structures would have done wonders...a rainbow even. Next year maybe a cleaner water slip which I saw was loaded with logs and other flotsam. Overall a great great day for Buffalo and the gay community. I heard several people say, "This is better than the St. Patrick’s Day celebration!"

Didn't get to the waterfront but it looks great from the photos I've seen. The parade was great, too. And, FINALLY, we got the entire width of the street instead of having to scrape by oncoming traffic and parked cars. Only took 20 years!
