Name that Food Shack!

Name that Food Shack!
Now that final work is being completed on the food shack, it's time to give it a name. The ECHDC has decided that the public should have a part in naming the eatery (see rendering). Located on the Central Wharf, the shack will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There will also be beer and wine served, as well as patio seating. The food venue is scheduled to open July 1st, which means that the name must be decided upon rather quickly.

"When we opened our doors last winter and asked the public what they wanted to see on the waterfront, food was one of the top three items, along with improved access and authentic experiences," said ECHDC President Thomas P. Dee. "The new food shack is a sign that we are listening and are committed to providing a waterfront that can be enjoyed by all. Reaching out to the public for the name came naturally, given the many creative ideas that the public has already contributed."

Following are the contest details:

The contest begins today and submissions will be accepted through Wednesday, June 29 at 5 p.m. Members of the "Summer 2011" citizen's advisory panel will choose the winning submission, which will then become the official name of the new dining location.

To participate, submit the name suggestion, along with your name, address and phone number to eriecanalharbor@empire.state.ny.us with the words "Name Contest" in the subject line. One entry per person, but each person can make several suggestions. Multiple members of a household may submit separate entries. Any submission and/or suggested name shall become the property of ECHDC.

God I have to completely agree here, the fact that someone produced a rendering of the shack makes it that much more awful.......A nice start to the inner harbor but a food shack, Is this Tom Dees idea? all of those credentials and we are having a name contest on a shack?

lol, when they said it was to be built with reclaimed wood from a barn in akron, I thought it would be something with interesting styling.

instead we have an underwhelming standard shack but with 100 year old barn siding.

better than nothing but I hope it either gets well integrated later on or taken down at some point

Sounds good, Arm. Maybe it should already be preservation-eligible if its wood is really from a barn that was old and therefore historic!

If we submit landmark paperwork and name it the Minnow Pro Historic Food Shack, how could anyone ever be soulless enough to tear it down?

This is actually a slap in the face to all of those who have been waiting for and activiated waterfront. I was down there a few weeks and ago, and people were there, wondering like zombies, but THEY CAME! Imagine if there was a REASON to be there... My point is, quit this band-aid crap and develop. The people of this region are STILL waiting for it!

Whether it is The Shack, The Food Shack, Food Shack or just Shack, it seems apparent that eatery is already publically named!

Remember when The Hatch, (or just Hatch) did not have that enclosed area? It was not long before it became enclosed.

On a hot, breezeless inland day it is cool along the waterfront and usually a bit breezy if there is no breeze anywhere else.

On a chilly day it is a mite chillier at the waterfront and a breeze will be there.

On a windy day away from the waterfront it is even more windy at the waterfront, so, forget about those table umbrellas which could end up flying up, up and away, and set up what eaters can enjoy as being outside but still protected.

Isn't "Shaq" some sports hero's name or the name of a foreign person, place or thing? And, boy, folks surely (or sure) are having a difficult time with that Bass Pro mindset!

Lego>"What happend to the Indoor Market plan? A mix of RETAIL and restaurants. NOT cheap looking shacks."
bobbycat>"Name it the Anchor Bar, Dinosaur Barbecue, or something else worth coming to. We already have the Hatch for burgers and fries."

While the ECHDC deserves criticism & mocking for several reasons over the years, and they've done some goofy things related to this shack (overhyped it way way too much, old barn wood gimmick, naming contest)....
... what I don't get is complaints from some that they're choosing this shack instead of viable development options. Seriously?

Doesn't all evidence for now indicate there are no viable options for developing something that would be year-round at that site?

How much customer flow do any of you think would happen to eat at an "Indoor Market" every week in Oct-Nov-Dec-Jan-Feb-March every year? How would there be enough customer $ to justify it? Even during summers, there might still be real doubts about what lego demands "mix of RETAIL and restaurants" being able to break even long term near there. Political/public pressure might tempt them to build something like that, but would it make sense if they can't find businesses willing to sign up to open in it?

Why would Anchor Bar want a 2nd location near our downtown as bobbycat suggests they would? Where's evidence that Dino BBQ wants to develop at Canalside and the ECHDC is refusing to allow them? Where's proof to indicate any private sector willingness to develop anything there?

It's possible that will change some day and real private sector interest will happen. Unless it does, don't those who demand it sound detached from (what's another word for reality? Some people tune out if that word is used).
If any restaurants, or any "RETAIL", had wanted to develop at Calanside so far, don't you all suppose the ECHDC would have been thrilled for even one step like that?

Score: -1 ( 3 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

As to bobbycat saying the shack is redundant to the Hatch being at the marina, time will tell.

Lines at the Hatch during June-Aug weekends often seem long. Maybe depending on month, day, events, etc., some days there might be plenty of customers for both. It's possible customer response to the shack will encourage a more substantial private sector eatery near there in the future - maybe still seasonal or maybe some business will take a chance for something year-round. Or not. We'll see.

Score: 2 ( 2 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Year-round won't work unless it is a boat you want to dock in the summer and then store in the fall...

That restaurant at the NFTA harbor is Dug's Dive (not Doug's Dive. Why Dug?) Isn't it on its third naming and third improvement, but it still remains an intricate spot on the waterfront?

Last winter, the owner could not keep it open year-round due to inability to keep ice and snow away without spending way too much taxpayer's money, and besides, the kids that work there go off to college.

Would not a new Shack face the same predicament as the Dive and Hatch; inaccessible for 5 months due to weather and lack of employees? It is not possible to change WNY's weather into Miami's, but who would want to anyway?
~~~~~~~~~
There is another restaurant across from the Marine Drive Apartments (on Erie St.?) which we can't recall the name of. We don't go to the waterfront to "be seen" so we don't go fancy. But one restaurant that was nearly as fancy near there was not open very long--can't remember the name of that one either.
Meanwhile, the Hatch, a Shack and the Dive will persevere. Put up more such places complete with potty rooms. Name them The Breeze Way, The Wind in Your Sails, Fore & Aft, Ships Ahoy, The Captain's Table, the Dock, the Gangway, the Slip, the Float, Float Your Boat, heck, that could even stir up more interest in staying local and boat ownership and keeping that NFTA harbor afloat for the WNY taxpaying public!!! Oh! Another eatery name: Staying Afloat!--would also suits these financial times!
~~~~~~~~
Isn't there some sort of information or souvenier stand in the 2nd building to the right at the entrance to the Commercial Slip? We managed to find a parking spot there all of one time, now we don't remember what we saw, because, like many people, for various legit reasons, we are NOT walkers. So then, open up parking spaces TO and then a wall IN that building and make it yet another place to catch some food and put in public toilets... OR, a giant parking area with shuttles on land and lake...

Decent food that 'normal' people can afford would be more important than a zippy name. Taking your kids out for a Saturday of fun & lunch shouldn't be brutally expensive, especially in Buffalo. Too many local places try to make up their lack of volume with rip-off prices.
