Artists to Paint at Landmark with Bright Future

Artists to Paint at Landmark with Bright Future

Artists and community members of Painting for Preservation will create artwork at local historic landmark Lyth Cottage on Harwood Place on Saturday, June 25 from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Artists of all media and skill are invited to render the ca. 1886 masonry cottage on Buffalo's East Side as a celebration of its historic aesthetic and recent preservation victory. Painting for Preservation is an inclusive group of artists committed to raising positive awareness of distressed historic buildings through on-site art-making.

Lyth Cottage was recently purchased as part of the City of Buffalo's Urban Homestead Program. As part of the program the new owner must make necessary improvements and occupy the building for five years.

5616842059_dc63f3d184_b.jpgOnce part of the estate of John Lyth, successful owner of a tile company specializing in decorative terra-cotta work, the cottage retains many of the company's designs. The young new owner is committed to the historic building and being part of the continued revitalization of the Hamlin Park Local Historic District.

Previous Painting for Preservation "Art-In" locations include The Old Blacksmith Shop; Harris Hardware, recognized as a "Seven to Save" historic location by the Preservation League of New York State; St. Vincent's Female Orphan Asylum; and, Vaux Barns attributed to Calvert Vaux, partner of Frederick Law Olmsted. Artwork created by Painting for Preservation artists will be exhibited while the National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Preservation Conference is in town October 19-22, 2011. Over 2,000 preservationists are expected to attend the conference.

Aaaaah, celebrating a preservation-ready site, turned preservation-opportunity! Thanks to Matt.

This is going to be a great community Art-In. All media and skills are welcome, or just come to gather and watch great artists.

How about an update on Matt Newton's efforts?

I drove by last Wednesday and am assuming the work is progressing on the interior based on all of the debris in the rolloff.

Across the street, 23 Harwood Place has been sold and the new owner is cleaning-out.

Great Mission-Style bungalow and I always wonder if it was (is) a Sears & Roebuck home.

Not a S&B Craftsman style bungalow BR. They sold those from 1908 to 1940, most were sold in those latter years. This house was designed by one of the only female Buffalo architects of the time, her name escapes me. I believe there are some S&B bungalows in N Buff, Sterling, Wellington etc. Those houses needed to be packaged and shipped, making an all brick exterior difficult.
