Peg's Park will soon be our park...

Peg’s Park will soon be our park...
Festival park continues to gain speed in the form of a bandshell performance stage, pergola, railings, winding paths, ornamental light standards, a boardwalk, and extended platform over the river and just about everything else that a stellar waterfront venue should have. A visit over the weekend unveiled an unexpected sight that led me to wander the grounds, feeling as if I was a kid who had just discovered a new playground in my neighborhood. The best part is, Buffalo River Fest Park is a family playground that will allow visitors to partake in concerts, marriage ceremonies, picnics, reunions and boating events... all along the long forgotten Buffalo River, and just a three minute bike ride from the Inner Harbor.

We owe it all to the undeterred vision of Peg Overdorf who rallied to make all of this happen. Without her fortitude Buffalo River Fest Park would still be a rendering on a table, just as many waterfront renderings sit and collect dust. A visit to 'Peg's Park' is certainly a sight for sore eyes. Peg tells me that, "The sod and landscaping goes in this week, railings will be completed this week, sidewalks and new curb along Ohio Street over the next few weeks. Take note of the beautiful Irish Harp in the keystone on the wall of the bandshell. This is symbolic of the Irish heritage of this area and of all the great music that will be performed at this site. We are soliciting photographers and artists to set up shop for an all new Art and Photography Show on Saturday, June 18th. This year a tug from Great Lakes Tugs will join us and the Cotter (fire boat) will be offering rides up the Buffalo River on both Friday and Saturday. Opening day has not yet been confirmed."

Just remember one thing - the park's name. The park is designed to bring people to the waterfront to enjoy all sorts of festivals this summer. When looking upon Buffalo River Fest Park, I still have to rub my eyes to make sure that I'm not staring at a mirage that will disappear as suddenly as it sprang up. And the next time someone tells you that one person can't make a difference in Buffalo... think again.

Buffalo River Fest Park is within short walking distance of Swannie House, Father Conway Park (with softball diamonds), a canoe and kayak launch, and the BSRA Rowing Boathouse.

It would be awesome to have a small boat / canoe / kayak / bicycle / beach chair rental shop set up here. Although cliche, a hot dog and burger shanty would be nice too!

If you rent a kayak at the harbor this is maybe a 10 minute paddle away. Swannie is right across the street. I'd love to see more but much of that is available now. Can't wait for Riverfest.

These must be computer renderings! How could such a thing be allowed to happen without an ECHDC spending millions of dollars for fancy architects creating absolutely nothing. Where is the big box store? What is supposed to attract millions of visitors from hundreds of miles around? Is this supposed to be just for people who live here? Just crazy! Why would we spend money on stuff for people who live here? If we are not careful more people might want to live in Buffalo. Property values might go up. There goes the neighborhood!

Please, Peg Overdorf, move your desk to the ECHDC offices, hack into their computers and make more stuff happen. Please!

I had the pleasure of meeting Peg when I marched in the Old Neighborhood parade in the First Ward back in March. Her commitment to that area of the city is simply amazing. Keep up the good work!

I pay for police service in Alden I am never going to us, or road projects in Amherst or hospitals or schools in my own municipality I may never use. Taxes are about common good, it is not and should not be construed as consumerism where you expect a direct return for every penny.

You should live on Antarctica. No taxes and you're welcome to tear down any building you can find. Paradise.

I'm surprised at how quickly this has moved forward. Great to see once in a while.

Is there a link to an updated site plan or rendering? The image above is the original plan but it's been modified (as noted under the image)

Not to be combative, but Daniel Sack's comments speak volumes about why our waterfront has not evolved at the pace we all desire. Rather than work in concert with each and offer some flexibility in design and planning, we immediately kill projects if we don't like certain aspects of them. I see this as Sack and Tielman's major defect even though their hearts are in the right place when it comes to saving the character of Buffalo.

Peg Overdorf championed this park because she didn't let people get in her way and made those people who wanted a say prove they had skin in the game (neighborhood). I did a tour down there and was told Peg just wanted people to leave her alone so she could get this built, and that ECHDC's construction director is one of Peg's board members and basically acted as the manager for this project. Why can he build this so park quickly, but his own projects at Canal Side flounder? I think we all know why.

I know many posters know more about the watefront and planning, but having attended a couple Bass Pro project hearings and seeing Sack on one side and Peg advocating a completely contrary viewpoint, I felt compelled to comment.

Peg for Mayor.

I don't know Peg. Seems the scale of her project is a tad smaller than the $100+ million Bass Pro project that I opposed. I did not oppose Peg's project and do not remember that Peg supported the Bass Pro project as is indicated above. I'm not saying Water guy is incorrect, I just did not know that; She had every right to be supportive of Bass Pro - I simply sidagreed.

I did not simply dislike "certain aspects" of the Bass Pro project, I disliked almost every aspect of the project - especially the $100 million for Bass Pro. No it wasn't "just" a $35 million subsidy for Bass Pro. I also disliked the enormous scale of the buildings and parking garages. I disliked the fact that there was only one small area of the project for residential use (adjacent to the parking garage near the Marine Drive Apartments).

A lot of interesting aspects of this park:

1. The skyline across the river. I don't think you could have a better view of the active gain elevators. Some people could argue that this industry is not a pleasant view but I think its a great way to showcase these structures (A well a history lesson).
2. In the master plan, their seems to be docks for individual private boats. Yet, at the same time their is the outdoor seating and pier for the general public. This is great use of the river. I'm happy to know that I will be able to walk up to the water and sit around the water (Also, I like to draw so I can draw some of my favorite structures across the river). But at the same time the river can directly be used for the neighborhood people as their docking for boats.
3. The outdoor stage and seating looks like a very interesting space. If anyone notice, its looks similar to that of a Greek amphitheater. I'm curious to see a rending of that area. Does it have an earth slope seating? How big is it? Regardless, it still looks like a interesting space that's nice to see it could hold a event to some extent but not taking the majority of space.
4. Difference between the garden and formal gardens. The fact the formal gardens are near the parking lot and the pier is a good decision so it gives people entering the park a nice perspective of a new modern park; A formal look. While the garden, has an organic path, most likely with a mimic of a natural environmental, leading to the concert space will be a nice experience for all.

One problem I have is the architecture itself. It's sort of generic and hate to say it boring. I think this park would be a great opportunity for students from a college to express and reflected the neighborhood while experimenting. But I guess this is my personal option.

What Buffalo needs, and this could be a great location for, is a place to pull your boat up to(no charge)and go eat on the water. Nothing too fancy with indoor/outdoor seating. I know this is a public park, but without much residential nearby, it needs an attraction or anchor to make it a destination, imo.

Great addition to a once abandoned area. Peg Overdorf is a driving force for good in this neighborhood. I just hope the locals respect and take care of it. This area will become safer because of this. Someday I just might come home... maybe if more taverns get torn down - good to see hundreds of them gone. What a curse they have been to this part of Buffalo, no Buffalo as a whole.

Keep up the great work Peg, I am very proud of you and your efforts to make the Valley and the First Ward enjoyable and safe places to live.
