Filigrees is a model of reinvention. It could not have been easy to reform the much beloved independent performance space called, "Nobody's", into something even better and more ambitious. You'll just have to see for yourself. Filigrees is still host to countless musicians and artists, but thanks to owner Melissa Campbell's vision, it got a boost in poise as well. Reinvention wasn't just the impetus behind Filigrees; it's everywhere in the shop. Fashion designers reclaim unwanted clothing and fabric into art for your body. Local artists display their beautiful works in a space supportive of our deeply expressive culture. I love Filigrees because the artists are actively creating the shop, all the time. That hot shirt you just plucked off a hanger might have been finished ten minutes before you walked in the door and is certainly one-of-a-kind.
So rather than dressing up your living room with a print you ordered from a warehouse off the internet, find a painting at Filigrees that speaks to you and give it a good home. Or maybe take one of the many classes offered and make your very own stuff to take home. This city needs more people like Melissa. I know she busts her butt (along with a group of other dedicated artists and musicians) to bring the city INFRINGEMENT every summer and opens FILIGREES to meetings for the festival. And you HAD to see her (outfit? get-up?) @ the Halloween party last year. God Bless her.
