GO-Buffalo’s 30 Days of Bicycle Benefits: Café 59
By Green Options Buffalo:

In our series, 30 Days of Bicycle Benefits, you will be introduced to 30 new businesses that will offer you great discounts for riding your bike and wearing your helmet. Thirty businesses that want to say, "Thank you," for choosing not to drive your car.

Café 59 - Free Cookie with Meal, or Large drink for the price of a Small

Like so many local business owners that we have spoken with, Chris (the owner of Café 59) seems to have been matched with his establishment by a mix of fate and circumstance. Maybe they're the same thing. As a grad student, Chris was friends with previous owners and played a roll helping to get the kitchen running while living in the apartment above the shop. Chris eventually moved out of that apartment and rehabbed a house on the west side, even building a community garden to help beautify his block. Rehabilitating a house is a monumental project and when it was done, Chris needed another project, "and that was the café."

Chris's work ethic paid off, Café 59 is cozy and unique. The giant front windows flood the shop with natural light bringing out the pastel colors in a way that makes you feel like you're on a picnic. The furniture is simple, but still has character and is well placed for keeping the café's open and breezy feel. Free wifi, a community library, complimentary iced-tea and a great selection of foods certainly don't hurt the success of Café 59. Chris believes that you should know your neighbors before you open up a business for them and Chris certainly knows Allentown. The menu has choices for the strictest of vegans, salivating omnivores and sweet toothed stimulant seekers alike. So ride in with your bicycle benefits stickered helmet and Chris will reward you with a free cookie added to your meal or a large drink for the price of a small.

We eat at Cafe 59 every chance we get - they have the most amazing salads, and they are GF-friendly (you can get their excellent sandwiches on gluten-free English muffins simply by request!) Their soups are wonderful, too!

Friendly service, great food, affordable prices and a clean place to eat...who could ask for more?!

Call me "old school", but I still miss this place when it was Java Temple. Liked the older part that had the jukebox, sitting out on the patio. Always had killer coffee and snacks. Loved the girl that ran it, the drop dead goregous bald girl (think I remember saying she was moving to Amsterdam). I've never actually been into this incarnation of it, Cafe 59. Always hear great things about it though.
