Funding approved for Tifft Street Pier

Funding approved for Tifft Street Pier
A meeting of the Buffalo and Erie County Greenway Standing Committee* recently saw approval of funding for various urban projects, many of them situated along the waterfront. One of those projects was the Tifft Street Pier - the committee has approved $470,000 towards the amenity that will provide access to people for fishing, strolling, etc. while also creating an extension to the existing three mile path. Some of the nearby destinations include Gallagher Beach, Tifft Nature Preserve, NFTA boat harbor and the Outer Harbor Greenbelt.

This is another crucial component to a long list of waterfront features that the public has been clamoring for - this stretch of the Outer Harbor has come around in recent years via provisions such as boardwalks, piers and trails. It is also an area that has been under close observation as of late, since the public has been brought into numerous discussions in order to pinpoint additional amenities needed.

*The committee receives $2 million a year from NYPA according to the terms of a 50-year licensing agreement the Authority signed for the Niagara Power Project in 2007.

Is the $2 Million in Federal funding in place to complete the Tifft Pier project?

It looks like this will be a walkway to nowhere until the rest of the funding is secured.

It may be limited in connectivity but I would argue each build out is a little victory that leads to another.

I agree 100% with you SenecaFire. It is more progress than this area of the city has seen in 20 years and if in 3 years it is completed as anticipated by the plans I will be really happy. As far as I can tell they are moving along on schedule. It is a definite win for the Waterfront!

The more and more I see the construction and visualizations of the park, I realize that this is essentially a commuter park. No one is in walking distance.

By design, this park should have a few communities within walking distance. Once the Coast Guard leaves, residences can be built at the northern end. But, we need two or three other communities to take shape along this park system, near the marinas, and union ship canal. That way, multiple businesses (cafés, restaurants, bars, etc) can survive. There is NFTA land available for this, but it's currently warehouse space.

..."will provide access to people for fishing, strolling, etc."...

Great idea. Great article, BUT... if people are both fishing AND strolling along the railing (or even both railings) in the above picture, please keep in mind how much area casting (for fishing, not for a movie) requires.
