Encore - Where Steak Meets Sushi

Encore - Where Steak Meets Sushi
I was recently checking out Buffalo Spree's article on WNY eligibles.  A number of the Buffalo Sabres were featured and from what I remember, all but one listed Encore as a favorite restaurant in WNY.  This is pretty impressive considering a majority of the players live in the burbs.  I hang my lid right around the corner from Encore (have been there many nights for drinks) so I decided to check out their cuisine on a recent Tuesday evening.

I was welcomed by Mike Greco and must say that after a few minutes of Q&A and a couple 'apps', Encore elevated from a hidden gem of a bar to a prime-time restaurant find.  Owners Dale Segal, Joe Gugino and Jon Mckissock, along with GM Mike Greco and Head Chef Chris Daigler have a combined experience of over 75 years in WNY restaurants (Hutch's, Oliver's, Shogun, Steer... etcetera).

If I were to categorize Encore, I would say it is a hipper version of Mothers.  Those I have talked to rave about Encore's sushi and I definitely agree.  I like Papaya, Kuni's & Seabar for sushi and I am compelled to say that the rolls I tried Tuesday easily rank up there as some of Buffalo's best- no question (can you say all you can eat sushi special on Tuesday nights?!!!!).

Encore's menu has many staples, but they take pride in preparing a separate page of nightly specials.

Encore-NY-Buffalo.jpg

Chef Chris started me out with the Ginger and Lobster Rangoons.  I have to admit, I rarely order ginger anything.  Other then cleansing the palate between sushi offerings, I tend to stay away from ginger.   I really liked the presentation and was pleased that the ginger was quite subtle.  The rangoons, paired with Kimchi and soy glaze, were cooked to perfection and were delicious.  Chef selected a model dish to start my dining experience.

Next up, the Housemade Gnocchi.  This is definitely a dish I would order as a main course if offered.  I rarely see gnocchi without red sauce.  The dish was combined with peas, roasted mushrooms and mixed in a truffle cream sauce.   The taste was simply exquisite.  Chef's technique for preparing the Gnocchi was excellent.  I am heading back to Encore soon and being a creature of habit will be sure to order this dish again!

When Mike brought out the next selection, I immediately thought of Stonehenge.  The Asparagus Spring Rolls were very appealing to the eyes and also most tasteful.  Prepared perfectly, there was a pleasant hint of lemon (my brain thought summer) in the Goat Cheese Fondue.  I would not think lemon would compliment asparagus; very savory.

I actually asked to choose the entrée and went with the Pasta Bolognese (I saw a gentleman at the bar enjoying).  It was hearty, had a nice little kick to it and the sauce was not too sweet (I am impartial to a pork based sauce).  This dish is prepared with a nice balance of pancetta, beef, pork and veal.  I was very happy with the choice.

Encore is a cool, hip space that has something for everybody.  I love the semi-hidden booths and the lively energy upstairs (seats 120).  The food is delectable, distinctive and is starting to catch on.  They cater to the theatre goers at Shea's (dinner specials), and are also open for lunch. They plan on remodeling the outside patio in early April.

Destinations like Encore make Buffalo special.  I can't believe it has taken me two years to discover this treasure.  Enjoy!

Encore is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in the area.

I truly agree with Mike. Dale and his crew over at Encore do a phenomenal job. Service is great and the food is tasy and innovative.

the food is amazing. the after-hours crowd leaves a lot to be desired. It seems to attract all the chippewa rejects and a whole lot of Snooki wanna-be's. The 5 bouncers at the door, one trying to look tougher than the other, creates an uneasy feeling as you enter and makes you wonder why they need so much security. Mothers, it is not.

Judging by his comments, Burbsarenotbuffalo seems to be well versed with the crowd and scene. Perhaps you are one of those Chippewa rejects?

I wish I were young enough to consider myself part of any "scene". I have, however, lived nearby for quite some time, and was a big fan of Hemingways. I checked out Encore early on and found the crowd obnoxious and frat-like. I tried again more recently after an event at Shea's and left after finding much of the same. This is just my observation, and my opinion. I said the food was great, and I certainly will eat there again during dinner hours. The management seems to agree with my assessment of the night crowd, judging by the amount of security they have greeting you. Try going to Mothers, Scarlet, or even Fat Bob's- they all serve dinner but have bars that don't seem to require the kind of security Encore seems to. It's a totally fair observation.

Show me where in the article that Kupczyk wrote where it say anything about the restaurant after the hours of 11 p.m.? It was a well-written, positive article about a good establishment and you have to come in with your personal reflections and one-sided views and $h&& all over it. You don't like the crowd there after 11? Stay home or -- go to Volkers for the $1.99 Vodka Tonic.

"Show me where in the article that Kupczyk wrote where it say anything about the restaurant after the hours of 11 p.m.?"

I will show you- he says:
"I hang my lid right around the corner from Encore (have been there many nights for drinks) so I decided to check out their cuisine on a recent Tuesday evening."

The ONLY reason I decided to comment was because I too "hang my lid" around the corner, and have also been there at night, as well as for dinner. So aside from being wrong, you go on to say that I should not be expressing my "personal reflections and one-sided views" soo am I just not allowed to comment unless I agree with the author? .. Kupczyk's article was his personal reflection, and I offered mine. BRO allows commenting for a reason. Unfortunately, since my opinions do not match with yours, you interpret my observations as "$hi#$#ing all over" the article. I said the food was good. I dislike the crowd and the security over-kill, and I said so. Get over it.

As for the $1.99 Vodka Tonics- sounds like a steal. I'll have to check it out.
And btw, its spelled Voelkers, not Volkers, as any real Buffalonian knows, you moron.

Yep, you're right -- that quote you copy and pasted does in fact talk about it being a nightclub after the hours of 11. You're a hundred percent correct.

Wait...no, it doesn't. You moron. And if you hang your hat, as the expression goes, around the corner from Encore, then you live in my neighborhood. And that's scary. Because you're obviously obtuse.

Attention: When I want to mingle with those of a lower socioeconomic status, I go to Voelker's. Did you notice the spelling? They also put out a killer cold cut spread on New Year's Eve.

Who wouldn't love Voelkers. Although it is dangerously close to a suburb (Kenmore is about 5 miles away) you can still smoke inside when your bowling. I just wish that had Genny Cream in the can.

"Yep, you're right -- that quote you copy and pasted does in fact talk about it being a nightclub after the hours of 11. You're a hundred percent correct."

no one- not the author or myself, used the word nightclub. No matter how Jersey Shore the clientele gets, I still would not refer to it as a nightclub. You also keep referring to "after 11pm", and again neither I nor the author referred to any specific time of day. I can tell you that the first time I was there it was well before 11pm.

The author referred to having drinks there, and then deciding to eat there, which led me to comment on my experience having drinks there, and eating there. Simple. Not "obtuse" at all.

I am well aware that the correct form of the expression is "hang your hat", not "hang your lid"- but, since I was QUOTING the author, I reused his version, hence the QUOTATIONS.

Your passionate defense of this establishment leads me to believe you are some sort of stakeholder in it. If that is the case, then you should make that clear in the interest of full disclosure. If not, then you should be respectful of the fact that some people may disagree with you. If you read the comments further, it sounds like quite a few people feel the same way. But seriously- let the commenters comment, neighbor.

Actually the Rangoon’s look nothing, even remotely, like any fetal anatomical structure I have ever seen. Fetuses indeed. We call this "Projection."

Sorry DOC, but this has absolutely nothing to do with "Projection." You might want to dig out your old ECC Psychology text and check that before you make any more ridiculous assessments. I'm just curious, do you often begin conversations with, "Methinks...."? I'm almost sure that you do.

Food is fantastic. Great hosts. Great happy hour, and late crowd. One of the best, and most unique bars in the city. I cant wait to see what the patio is like once it is redone. Keep it up guys!

Great food as the article states. Never been there to "enjoy" the late night company, but I have heard the same stories as burbs reports in his first comment, and none of his opponents have offered to refute.

i must be getting the wrong food because i have been here 3 different times and the entrees have been mediocre at best. steaks done well done when asked medium, limp vegetables as sides and non existent service. sushi is decent but nothing to keep me coming back for.

Buff. I luv how North Buffalo is making a huge comeback, big time ..It's wicked awesome.
