Cafe 59 crafts a new image in line with Allentown

Cafe 59 crafts a new image in line with Allentown
After being closed for about a week, Cafe 59 has reopened under new ownership. If you're familiar with Cafe 59, that might come as a bit of a shock considering that the cafe had pretty much been coasting along, relatively unchanged, for years. A couple years back, the previous owner expanded the footprint of the restaurant, but the food remained the same all the while. "That's not what we're about," owner Chris Connolly told me. "You'll notice that the menu has changed along with operations... we're even going to extend the hours. We're opening earlier in the morning (7am) and we're looking at possibly extending the hours once we get everything running smoothly."

Gone are the days of waiting at the counter to place your order. As of this week there is actual table service.... and the tables are set with bright yellow place mats, adding a bit of comfort to the surroundings. "We're looking to warm things up around here," Chris said. "We may also bring in some comfy furniture for that 'coffee house' feel." Not only is the look and feel changing over time, the menu has been altered as well. Customers will notice that there is a page dedicated to healthy starters, sides and small plates - dolmades, pickled beets, roasted eggplant, artichoke hearts, etc. The lunch lineup features Italian sausage, BBQ pulled pork, pizza panini, ham and hummus, along with the option of building your own sandwich.

For the early birds, Cafe 59 serves up breakfast sandwiches until 11am and those looking for healthy options will be glad to see that a page of the menu is dedicated to salads. A thoughtful twist, which is rarely seen at restaurants, is the earth-friendly initiative as well as the local purchasing policy. Cafe 59 saves all of its food scraps, along with its spent coffee grounds for composting at a West Side community garden. Regional products are identified on the back of the menu, including Costanzo's rolls, Weber's mustard and Mineo and Sapio sausages.

Hopefully people living and working in Allentown will notice all of these great changes and will stop in to try out some of the offerings. After all, there aren't a lot of cafes in Allentown and the ones that are open could certainly use the support. The next time you think about stopping at your favorite national chain, why not try something different and opt to support your locally owned neighborhood cafe?

The best of luck! But I will miss Leon, he exemplified the dedicated small business owner.

No more pink?

I'll agree with the positive Leon vibe. He was quite a step up from Java Temple (remember the cat walking across the cooler?).

The food is very good. I've tried a few things, but the French Dip was way beyond what I expected. The food is worthy of dinner, let's hope that occurs soon.

glad to see expanded hours.. but hopefully the food remains good quality, as it was before.

the expanded hours are good news. i was always puzzled that allentown's only coffee house was always closed evenings, which is the only time most of us working stiffs get to enjoy them.

The menu lists Margherita pepperoni as one of the locally produced products that they use, but Margherita pepperoni is not from Buffalo.

You read the entire menu, and came up with that? Good for you.

I also noticed that the Caramel Chameleon name, which dated back to the Java Temple, has been retired. In its place is yet another perpetuation of Starbucks' bastardization of the term "macchiato." Overall, the menu looks good. After ten years of the same exact menu, a change was definitely needed.

Hello All- I am the new guy at Cafe 59, and just wanted to thank everyone for the support that we have already received.

Sorry to hear about my menu snafu, which will forever be known as Pepperoni-gate. Truth be told, I am not a native Buffalonian, and my research on Buffalo made foods was largely based upon various websites which sell Buffalo products...they seem to think that Margherita pepperoni is Buffalo made, too.

And yes, the sweet concoction that most people know as a "macchiato" is nothing like the traditional espresso with a marking of froth, but neither is a spectrum of flavored mayos anything but a distant cousin to true "aioli," the simple emulsification of garlic and oil; the titles are used only to simplify communication, to be colloquial.

Mea culpa. -Chris

Imagine a restaurant/cafe where the owner appears to like both food and people? Who knew such a thing was possible? Glad to see some new life being breathed into the restos that share this corner.

Terrific news. The table service is an excellent idea...I hope other cafes take note and switch to table service.

Chris,
I will happily patronize and promote Cafe 59 if only because of your humorous post above. Thank you. I wish you much success.
