Atmosphere @ 62

Atmosphere @ 62
As much as I was sad to see Fiddleheads go, it's a relief to see the corner of Allen and Franklin filled so quickly. The new restaurant taking over the location is going to be called Atmosphere @ 62, which is being touted as an American fine dining establishment. The interior is being remodeled in preparation for what will be a white linen tablecloth, candle lit eatery serving steaks, pastas, fish, etc.

Atmosphere 62 is the creation of owners David Stahl and Brian Szkatulski, who recently experienced a major setback when their restaurant in Gowanda (Atmosphere @ 31) was destroyed by fire after being open for just three months. The two wasted no time in setting out in search of another location, setting their eyes on the city - a part of Greater Buffalo that they were relatively unfamiliar with. The Fiddleheads location turned out to be exactly what they were looking for.

Atmosphere @ 62 is scheduled to open the weekend of the Saint Patrick's Day Parade. It will feature a full bar upon opening.

??? No idea Fiddleheads was gone. How about a Real Estate section that reflects such things? Like Lu's being vacant, among other things not reported.

Weird that they got a liquor license so quickly. The Fiddlehead's auction was just 12 days ago.

Both your comment and LouisTully's make me raise an eyebrow.

Things that make you go hmmm...

A few months back the previous owners tried doing breakfast/lunch so they could spend more time with their family. Kind of strange the new owner didn't buy at least some of the 'fixed' pieces at the auction (walkin cooler, oven, etc.)

Cafe 59 across the street is undergoing a change as well. Will reopen next week with a new menu.

Wow. Also didn't know Fiddleheads was gone. It had been there a while. Glad to see this space will not be vacant for long. Any inside track on the former Le Metro/Mode at Elmwood and West Utica? That's a very visible location. Also no mention of that restaurant's closing here. And what happened to Melanie's Sweets next to Shea's on Main Street? That had been there forever (although was sorely in need of a makeover, in my opinion). There's a lot of shuffling around in 'Theatre Place.' Marcella's is moving back into its old location, Melanie's is gone and the former Shea's ticket office is still vacant. I see a strong opportunity here for something new (I think a nice wine bar or coffee shop in the old ticket office next to Shea's would be great).

On a side note, I went to pick up tickets at Shea's for Shrek last week and ran into a couple who couldn't find the Tralf (they were right outside on Main Street). The Tralf has NO SIGNAGE ON MAIN STREET. What a travesty. Get a sign out there with a billboard of upcoming shows. This is the THEATRE DISTRICT. Something small like that would really help add to the 'vibrancy' down there. I applaud the Irish Classical Theatre for adding their own classy marquee last year.

Speaking of wine bars (and shuffling spaces in general): look who's moving from Elmwood to Genessee Gateway:

Anyone know if Tabree is still doing well in the same Elmwood building?

Every time I go to Tabree, it's packed... (although I know that may not be an indication of if a restaurant is actually making money...)

I heard Sole (the Mexican restaurant in the Walker Center) is opening a location in the old Juniper/May Jen spot on Elmwood...

Yes Sole is moving to Elmwood this Spring. The Wine Thief move is very bizare, of course with landlord from hell moving in I don't blame them for getting out. Tabree rocks, but I think they are moving to the burbs, space is real tiny during the long cruel fall-winter-spring.

How could BR be so late on these moves.

Great to hear that about Sole, but kind of surprised they'd pick that space over something that's perhaps more visible (such as the old Mode or soon-to-be vacant home of the Wine Thief.). It also gulls me that the former home of Sweet Tooth still sits vacant.

Isn't Sole owned by the same people who owned Le Metro?

I can't really see Tabree moving to the suburbs... I mean really, how can you do a Parisian bistro in the burbs?

If you think a French bistro cannot be done correctly in the suburbs, then you should check out Petit Louis the next time you're in Baltimore.

Though technically it's within the city's boundries, in the Roland Park neighborhood I think, it has a decidedly suburban feel to it. At least it's what I consider "suburban" --surrounded by huge houses with big lawns, driveways, and garages and shopping plazas. The bistro itself even has a big parking lot prominently out in front. Of course, Roland Park is old and beautiful, and it's rather upscale, mind you. But if you passed on dining at this place because you couldn't get past the outside of the place, you'd be missing out.

speaking of Mexican restaurants....the thing I can never understand is why the former Don Pablos on Elmwood is still vacant...how long has it sat empty? 10 years? more?

It hasn't been that long. I think they closed in maybe 2006? Or even more recently?

Fiddleheads was a first class restaurant. When BRO did an article on them closeing for dinner I had a feeling trouble was in store for them. Good luck to the new owners. Fiddleheads closeing is yet another sign that Allen is spireling into further decline. Actually suprised a restaurant is opening in the space and not another "weave" salon.

Good luck to Brian and David!
Their vision for a finer dining experience is much needed for that block. And a corner window view for all the diners watching the comings and goings of Allen is eagerly anticipated.

Fiddleheads was a fine dining experience. Mark my words, this will be another seedy bar within 2 months IF it lasts with these two and their history. Ask around.

Seriously? Knowing Bri and David and the support they have with Atmosphere @62, it will last a lot longer than two years.

So by seedy do you mean Scarlet, Mothers, and Fat Bob's? I think they've done pretty well for themselves with their respective cuisines for quite awhile. The new owners are very forward thinking and committed to providing a fantastic dining experience. Again, the negativity and cynicism that comes out of some of our readers before they've even given it a chance is mind boggling. Give it a try before you jump to conclusions! And check out other cities....there are plenty of great restaurants that exist and thrive in all different types of neighborhoods. That's the beauty of an urban environment.

Knowing Brian and his commitment to excellence and detail and knowing about their place in Gowanda and the fact it made a big difference in that small town - this restaurant will be around for a long long time and will be a favorite amongst many in the downtown arena.
If they have some happy hours on Fridays, etc. it will be a go-to place for many of the downtown workers too after work.
