Why wait for hell to freeze over?

Why wait for hell to freeze over?
What was it... like three years ago that we began pounding the drum to get skating back on Gala Waters (Hoyt Lake)? Remember the conversations? Recall the frustrations? At one point, this was prime skating in Buffalo, with hundreds of people coming from around the region to enjoy winter at Delaware Park. We've seen the old photos... we've heard stories about the fun times that were had by all. We've also heard horror stories about politicians illegally dumping salt into the lake causing the surface to never again freeze properly. In the end, nobody has skated on Gala Waters at Delaware Park for years, leaving only fond memories to reflect upon.

Last weekend, all of that changed. Over the course of Saturday and Sunday, a few brazen souls took to the ice despite an official organized effort to return skating to the lake. It started with a couple of skaters, a few 'tweets' and a bunch of shout-outs on Facebook. Before the end of the weekend came to a close, two makeshift rinks had been cleared and hockey games were in full swing. Since that time, the buzz has grown louder, culminating in a concerted effort to create one large rink. As of today, skaters were showing up with snow throwers, brooms and shovels. That's when I happened upon the scene. At 2:30pm, the skaters were grilling chicken and listening to music in-between duking it out with each other on a rink that was more than accommodating and pretty darn smooth.

 Buffalo-Hockey-NY.jpg

I spoke to a couple of the players who told me that they were having the time of their lives. "The last time that I skated out here," one player said. "I was about seven years old... that's how long it's been. People drive by and see what's going on... then they come back with skates and a stick. We've been out here all day long just enjoying being outdoors in the wintertime." As I spoke to the players, I noticed a woman and her dog walking across the middle of the lake with a young child on a sled in tow. It was an incredible sight to see - hockey players charging the goalie while sledders used the lake as a means to get to and from the Shakespeare sledding hill. Instead of waiting for the green light, people had taken it upon themselves to reclaim an old winter tradition.

Right or wrong, sometimes we need to take matters into our own hands if we know that it's the only way to get something done in this city. My hopes are, that 'the powers that be' will take notice and take a step towards declaring the skating as an official and legit activity. It appears that there is no reason to disallow public skating on the lake. If these guys (and girls) were to wait for skating to be unveiled as an approved pastime, they would have stood a better chance waiting for hell to freeze over.

How long til this gets shut down?

This is great news. I can't remember the last time hockey was played on Hoyt Lake. Does anyone know if the Marcy Casino is open in the winter to serve coffee and hot chocolate?

Dunno, but there certainly is nothing preventing it from being rented out if an event were to take place.

Yea, I was trying to get an event on Hoyt Lake and it was a definite, No. The ice doesn't freeze well because the water moves too quickly beneath the layer. There is a layer of built of sediment at the bottom that makes the water move faster near the top.

It's good that no one fell through.

Unfortunate, I know.

Ice is solid where the rinks have been set up.

Maybe, but how thick is the ice? If the ice isn't 6 inches or more thick, the city might not want to deal with a potential injury/lawsuit if someone were to fall through so they don't green light it.

The hill for Shakespeare in the Park has a sign:

"Sled at your own risk"

I'm sure they could get their signmakers to change "sled" to "skate".

I solve problems. That's what I do.

Just because you post a sign that says, "Skate at your own risk" doesn't mean people won't bring a lawsuit if someone falls through the ice and drowns. Just like the way people file claims over complications with prescription medications despite being warned of the risks. I have no doubt that Jeffrey Freedman, Celino & Barnes and all the other personal injury attorneys would jump all over this one too. Your suggestion seems like an easy solution, but ahhh if only things were that simple.

Skating on Hoyt lake is cool, but even if it was legit you are at the mercy of the weather. I'd rather have an outdoor rink.

This is one of the reasons I'd love to see some type of Public Rink incorporated down at Canalside. The Keybank one is great, but wouldn't it be great to have one you could play hockey on, I don't think they allow at Keybank.

I mean we're having a big tournament soon, it would be great to see a Featured Pond Hockey Rink, with stands maybe a frozen Canal. Get the Sabres Old Timers to have a game and/or Sabah. Really they should have put the one from the Ice Bowl downtown instead of East Aurora. EA does have a GREAT set-up if you can ever check it out, but the Buffalo one should be outside HSBC or something.

Not that it's at Canal Side, but the MLK Splash Pad should be ready this coming Fall. I could be wrong though.

Either way, when it's ready they'll have skating there too within the City.

When the canals get built at Canal Side, I believe they won't be very deep with the intention of it being a place to skate in the winter.

This would've been awesome to know about in advance. I've been itching to skate out there but anyone I play with is wary of skating on the lake; and hockey alone is a little pointless.

I'd be confident in skating out there. I've seen all sorts of footprints and x-country ski tracks going all across the lake. Besides, how deep is the deepest point? I'd bring a whistle. You fall through, you blow it, you get helped. A few minutes isn't going to kill you and there are numbers of people in the park at any given point during daylight.

Am I mistaken, or did the Labatt tourney get floated for this site?

Not to mention, as I live nearby, I drive past the back of the gallery on my way home quite often, and there is almost always an ambulance staged next to the gallery's fountain. Must be a spot they use to stage from and receive calls because they're always there and just sitting around. So, someone falls in, blows whistle or some other method of calling for help, passerby sees said person and calls 911, dispatcher contacts ambulance, ambulance drives 150ft arrives at the scene.

Whelp - the cops kicked us off today. I think prior to this they were just turning a blind eye to it, but the cop today definitely seemed like he was sent down to put a stop to it.

They did the same thing to us two or three years ago. They were sent by the Olmsted Conservancy when they kicked us off.

We got kicked off the ice about an hour ago. The Police said the ice wasn't thick enough to skate safely but I say that is a load of hooeee! The ice is plenty thick and in great condition. I'm calling the Mayor's hotline for answers to this.

Score: 3 ( 3 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Yeah I would say hooeee too! With the cold we have been having it should be plenty thick. If there is a strong current under the ice from the stream there may be some thin ice but otherwise... The lake belongs to the people when will the government (who work for us, the people) start to allow us to use what is ours? There is no reason why someone can't go out and auger a few holes in strategic places to check on the thickness. If there is a thin area cordon it off. Allow the people to use their park. It doesn't belong to the city. It doesn't belong to the Olmstead Conservancy. It belongs to us.

Holy crap. Take a look around in WNY in the winter, and you see people sledding on any slope that can get a kid up to speed. Water that freezes should be skated on. It's Buffalo. We should get a better answer (any answer) from the park on why they'd not allow this.

If somebody came up with a thickness the ice should be (how many inches is safe?) and it was drilled, and found to be that thickness... I'd be all for pushing this.

Set a date and a time, get a hundred people skating (hopefully the ice doesn't break with all the weight) and see what the park does.

There is only one person in the picture wearing a helmet. This creates a tremendous liability for the city if someone gets hurt. Any one of these guys could sue the city if he gets hurt while skating on a public pond that isn't properly secured or managed. Negligence on the part of the victim doesn't usually eliminate perceived accountability or culpability from the city. This has been proven time and time again with sledding and skateboarding accidents where people have been seriously injured or killed.

if they shut this down it would just be another reason why to leave this sorry city and all its supid laws...the "man" getting in the way of aynthing productive..this would be almost as bad as the "no swimming" signs at Woodlawn Beach....a beach that says you aren't allowed to swim...how retarded....same deal at the mini beach at Erie Basin Marina....only in Buffalo would they prevent people from utilizing its natural resources....and yes it does only seem to happen here....you only have travel as far as Rochester to find a city and county which are much more reasonable as far as these things go.

a bunch of people taking in consideration the risk and initiative to skate on a lake is no different of a risk to the city if the same group of people were to building an ice rink in the middle of delaware park.

3 inches is safe to cross, 4 inches is safe for crowds. I find it hard to believe at this point in the winter it is not atleast 4 inches.

If I was on my way home from work and drove by a group of hockey-playing strangers skating on Hoyt Lake, it would make my day. Probably even my winter.
That a group of people would take the initiative to skate out there without getting an official 'ok' is inspiring, and exactly what the city needs. A group of people see the frozen lake, take the weather into account and say, "It makes no sense that we are not out there skating right now." and go out there and play. There was an opportunity to improve quality of life, so people seized it, without permission from the man. Heaven for-effing-bid!
Unfortunately the general consensus of the citizens & the government is, "that looks dangerous and poses a liability to the city that is going to tax the hell out of me no matter how many people sue. Better stay away."
It's such a shame because Buffalo presents so many unique opportunities to provide a quality of life that could far surpass most of the country. Those opportunities are simple things, like paying hockey on a frozen lake. That's where the priorities should be. Instead we're dreaming about taking on projects way too expensive and complicated for the city right now, like trying to figure out how to rehab a dozen or so gigantic dilapidated grain elevators. I'm not saying that reuse is a bad thing, I'm just saying we should figure out how to use our parks before we start taking on world-class urban development projects. Improve life in the the city with the resources at hand, build momentum, then the city will build itself.
