The Back Room @ Hardware

The Back Room @ Hardware
When Mark Goldman asked me to come over to take a look at the latest addition to Hardware, called The Back Room, I told him that I had already seen it when it was built out over a year ago. "No, not that back room," he laughed. "The Back Room." It turns out that, all along, there was another empty room behind the establishment - a room where the owner of the original hardware store used to live. It consisted of beautiful old hardwood floors, high ceilings, brick walls... the perfect space for a Bohemian acoustic music venue.

The Back Room will be dedicated to poets, musicians, grassroots causes and anyone with an inspirational bent to make Buffalo and Allentown a better place to live. Mark continued to say, "We're going to be hosting a weekly movie series in The Back Room with a drop screen and built-in projector. It's a listening room and gallery... a quiet performance area with no sound system. There's a door that leads to Hardware, with a separate door to the side street, meaning that people can use the space without having it open to the bar and restaurant. They can even use it when Hardware is closed. We're going to have community groups meet here, and guest speakers - it's going to add a lot to the area."

In the photo the floors have not been finished yet. There's a layer of dust on them. By the 27th they will look great.

Wish it could be a mini dance club....like Crowbar in the East Village 1988.

I'm sure that if someone were to organize it, Mark would be happy to support the initiative.

I love everything that Mark has done - the man puts his money where his mouth is. I do wish more people got even a fraction of the free press he gets...

Well this is pretty cool , but I'd stop short of such enthusiam design...his track record is sketchy at best considering the problems on Chippewa

Awesome...Goldman is a true urban revolutionary. I love Hardware and I am sure this asset will prove beneficial to the community and the establishment.

While I do give him some credit...the end of College has been worse since the Hardware opened. His garbage overflows; there is food on the ground attracting rats. And as far as preservation goes he has removed the 2 over 1 light wooden windows in this room and replaced them with 1 over 1 metal ones (they looked like metal). He replaced the wooden door with a gray steel one. I don't know how he can get away with using vinyl windows and steel doors on his building while the rest of us have to replace in kind!

I for one don’t think he is a saint for this neighborhood. Since the 4 bars opened/reopened (The Bend, DBGB, Samples and the Hardware) this neighborhood has gone downhill.

An interesting observation....while his latest project sits stalled on Amherst st....others have the same concern as you, a libility to the neighborhood. While he may great visions and wealth....too much baggage preceeds him.

Who are the others that have concerns? As a neighborhood activist living on Amherst St I know of no issue with Goldman. In fact the neighborhood supports the project, as we do all the new business that continues to revive Amherst Street.

What a big void this will fill!
It will be great to have a space as a dedicated listening room.

I look forward to the different types of art/music we will be able to experience here. Just hoping the community supports it.

That show on Sunday looks like a great way to kick it off!
