Ice Breaker Party Kicks off Buffalo Winterfest! Party Takes Place Friday in Heated, 10,000 Square Foot Tent!
The Powder Keg Festival countdown begins!

For anyone heading down to the Powder Key Festival, you will definitely want to attend the kick-off party Friday night. This is no ordinary party... it's going to be held in a 10,000 sq.' tent in the heart of downtown Buffalo. Other than some great live tunes being delivered by Eric Crittenden and friends, you may want to check out the inaugural Powder Keg Miss Snow Bunny contest, which is to be held at 8pm. Bring your snow buddies down to see all of action and raise a beer to toast to winter. This all takes place on Friday after work, so make sure to bring some casual clothes to the office along with your penchant to party. Here are the details:

It's a great way to kick-off the 2011 Buffalo Winterfest, and it happens Friday, February 11th, inside the Blue Light Music & Beer Garden, located along Seneca Street, between Pearl Street and Coca-Cola Field, in downtown Buffalo

This Powder Keg Festival Ice Breaker Party begins at 5pm, featuring the "Quizmaster", Dennis George and the Buffalo Office Trivia Championship.

From 5 to 8pm party-goers will enjoy the Rock and Blues of Eric Crittenden & Friends, as well as live music by Suckerpunch from 8-11pm.

As an added feature, the Edge 103.3 Snow Bunny Contest Finals take place at 8pm, with the selection of Miss Snow Bunny, from dozens of beautiful Western New York entries.

Sponsored by Blue Light and the Edge 103.3, the winner of the Snow Bunny Contest will win several great prizes, including airfare for two to Myrtle Beach, Florida.

The festival continues on Saturday, from 10am to 11pm, and Sunday, from 10am to 8pm...offering live entertainment and family fun for all.

How quickly this event seems to have devolved....from the world's largest ice maze and off ramp sledding to "snow bunnies" contests and frozen turkey hockey (disgusting). harrumph.

Sorry CindyLou, but you may feel all too comfortable with mediocrity, but I think, in 2011, Buffalo can strive for better than the objectification of women (so tired) and playing hockey with food, when people are starving throughout the world. Doesn't seem "classy" (in the words of Lee).

Check out the article a few above this one. They are having a Music and Art Concert on the Waterfront. Maybe go there instead of this event and you won't be so offended.

Why? Because I want Buffalo to be more than a simple, chauvinistic, beer-swilling town? You are showing your stripes DMZ.

Thanks for the insight JM.

A friend, who can't remember her password on BRO, asked that I forward her input "the disgusting thing is that people are starving a few blocks away from this glutton-fest. it's really insensitive to show such waste with food smack in the middle of the third poorest city on the country - a place where so many kids can't get a decent breakfast. it's an insult to places that run food drives and try to feed people in the day to day - the city mission, growing green, the community gardens, etc. I mean at least if they're going to stoop so low why not have an entry fee that anyone who plays hockey with food has to contribute a can of soup or whatever. At least at the wingfest they eat the crap."

Donations go to PAL.

A Turkey is when you get 3 strikes in a row in regular bowling. This is a play on words with that. Get 3 strikes you win. Get it! It's freezing out.

...."a place where so many kids can't get a breakfast..."

I've got no issue with you not liking the turn of events (at least your perception of the change) for this festival, but bringing in starving kids, that's a bit over the line.

If you're aware of a 'starving' child (locally) and you're not doing more than writing gibberish here, well, bad on you.

I think Powder Keg, Pond Hockey, and Car Show = Winterfest

Travelrrr - why is it that in the majority of these articles you always have something negative to say? I vote we have Buffalo Rising do an article on Travelrrr and how it's negative people like this that bring this city down :)
Anything outdoors is good in my book when we deal with winters like this every year! Great way to embrace what we have.

Actually, I couldn't be a bigger Buffalo booster, Serene. You are misreading my posts if you think I am a Buffalo negatron; for instance, I too, have said countlessly praised the different festivals embracing the outdoors. And, if you perceive my questioning of the status quo as a negative on Buffalo, sorry for you.

Being from Buffalo is all about beer-swilling, to stop would be be akin to giving up on who we are, to loose our culture. Might as well go on and say soda and have some Tabasco sauce with my eggs.... While playing hockey with frozen turkeys does seem a little insensitive; there is nothing wrong with indulging a bit while watching people play hockey and enjoying our winter weather!

Idk.. kinda odd it only being the 2nd one but why didn't they do anything like the ice maze this year??? Last year we went at the same time (Sunday 1ish) and it was standing roomm only.. forget about gettin into Pearl street, the line for the skyway tubing was out and around the corner it was 30 minutes plus for the maze. This time we have a beer tent..whoo hoo like Sean says its our past time but do we really need ANOTHER beer tent?

Today it was empty.... how was it on Saturday?? I enjoyed it nonetheless but there definately didn't seem to be nearly as much going on this time compared to the first year.

More interested in selling $15 hats and powder keg t-shirts than doing super cool stuff like the ice maze?? (What you would expect from Drew Cerza I suppose)

My fiancee and I went down on Sunday morning to the Pearl St area to see what this event was all about. Sadly that whole area seemed really disorganized and lacking in a visible theme. If you hadnt known about it being "Winterfest" before you went down, you may have not picked up on it being anything organized. It really could have used an info booth or a location map to let people know what was going on where and when.

The crowd grew steadily while we were there, but not wanting to start boozing at 1130am or downing bowls of chili in the stiff wind we found little else to do. The ice maze would have been a great addition, but a vendor we talked to said (somehow) they couldnt secure funding for it this year. The warm weather looked like it was putting the kibosh on the sledding hill to everybody who didnt bring a tube, but people were still lining up for it.

On the plus side, we drove down to the waterfront and found that the pond hockey was overflowing with people and was much more of a festival atmosphere.

All in all, IMO the event has all the makings of getting to be a big annual draw to the downtown area. I think our timing had alot to do with what we saw/experienced, so knowing that, we'll def be back next year in the mid-to-late afternoon. If we had little kids on the other hand, the event as-is would have been a perfect mix of things to do for a few hours. Looking forward to next year!
