Unstuff Your Life!: Kick the Clutter Habit and Completely Organize Your Life for Good By Andrew J. Mellen

Unstuff Your Life!: Kick the Clutter Habit and Completely Organize Your Life for Good By Andrew J. Mellen
Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Patricia Covley:

Did you promise yourself that 2011 is the year you are going to get truly organized?  Maybe you make this same resolution year after year.  If so, this may be the book for you.  Andrew Mellen, Oprah's "organization guru," claims to have a system to "bring order out of chaos for overwhelmed people everywhere."

Mellen starts out by having a philosophical discussion in a chapter entitled "You Are Not Your Stuff."  This section is a little too "touchy feely" for my taste, but he gets down to the nuts and bolts in the next chapter.  He sets aside a whole chapter to finding dedicated places for keys, wallet, purse and mail.  His constant themes are "like with like" and "one home for everything."  He suggests taking a month to think about and implement each chapter.

Subsequent chapters include organizing your kitchen and pantry, tackling your home office and paperwork, sorting out your clothes and closets, and cleaning auxiliary spaces like basements, attics, and garages.

(Now that I've read the book, I guess it's time to put what I've learned into practice.)

The truth is that clutter is the key to genius and inspiration. Eliminate the neat things which catch your eye and you elminate the fun. You become a boring, mechanical,
anally retentive ROBOT. You cease to be human. So, while the robots are throwing out all their goodies, relax, sit back, enjoy your own treasures and when no one is looking sneak a peek at their trash bin and maybe you will find a few new goodies to add to your collection.

So true. And when those 7' piles of papers and other 'treasures' collapse, pinning you against the floor, sneak another peak at your mobile phone that's just out of reach... then happily enjoy some of the other non-robot goodies piled on top of you while you gasp for air and wonder how many days will go by before someone notices you haven't shown up for work.
