Rohall's Corner opens in historic Black Rock

Rohall’s Corner opens in historic Black Rock
As of the New Year, Buffalo has a great new tavern on its hands that will soon incorporate an unusual food into the mix. Owner Greg Rohall recently purchased the former Our Grill establishment on Amherst Street and has been busy turning it into a comfortable bar that is already attracting patrons from all over the city. How did he do that? He respected the integrity and character of Our Grill while tastefully incorporating elements from other Buffalo businesses that were not so lucky.

To step into Rohall's Corner is to step into a proud deco Black Rock tavern. From the red leather bumpers on the bar to the green padded retro bar stools (snagged from a tavern in Niagara Falls), Rohall's Corner is nothing short of miraculous. The fact that it's owned by a young entrepreneur who understands the nature of the neighborhood and the city is inspiring. Greg even stocks War of 1812 beer, which goes hand-in-hand with the bar's preserved vibe. The lit-green deco glass block entranceway illuminates the front of the tavern while candlelit tables beckon customers to enjoy an intimate seating arrangement. The cafe tables are made from reclaimed bowling alley lanes - a fun conversation piece when seated at one of the salvaged church pews.

Rarely do you find a tavern that goes so far as to restore the old wooden fridges behind the bar. Normally its quicker and cheaper to remove them or use them for dry storage. Thankfully, Greg opted to restore the fridges, thus keeping with the original look and operational flow of the back bar. A couple of well-positioned neon beer signs and trays keep the clutter down to a minimum. Eventually the plan is to open up the large back room in order to introduce a restaurant specializing in Hungarian food - look out Black Rock! This will certainly become another welcome addition to a neighborhood that has seen a welcomed rebirth over the last couple of years.

Opens 4:00pm Tuesday through Friday and noon on Saturday and Sunday. Closed on Monday.

Amherst St is really taking off, great to see another business opening here. Construction continues at the Sportsmen, the old fire house just got a new owner occupant, and many long time business owners have began restoring their store fronts. Black Rock has real potential and is finally being recognized for our history, architecture, and value.

Good stuff, the place looks and sounds pretty chill, my kind of place.
Any news regarding Blackrock Kitchen and Bar?

Your kidding right? Black Rock is not an affluent area but we have many decent, down to earth, and interesting people from a wide range of income levels. We welcome even those that are challenged by the silly idea that "rubbing elbows with those of elevated socioeconomic status" is somehow relevant or essential to having a good time.

The idea is relevant and essential to me. I'm not asking for some mass validation. That's just how I roll these days. Thank you for your concern.

Too bad you are limiting your potential and experience by seeking only the company of such a narrow segment of the population. Wealth is not related to character, intelligence, or the ability to be engaging or interesting.

Again, why would you care? This is my choice. I'd rather hang with the swells at the Buffalo Chophouse than risk contracting hepatitis at establishments not frequented by those who frequent the Buffalo Chophouse.

I did visit last Thursday and had a great time there. I did go for the 1812 it was on special for 3 dollars a bottle. There was a card game going on at one of the tables and there wasn't a stool to be had at the bar. It was a nice crowd; don't know if anyone was "affluent" it didn't matter...a good thing.

Back when I was in college (30 years ago) I had a part time job with Roc-Mar bowling, "maintaining" several multi-family houses owned by Roc-Mar on the corner of Grant and Amherst. These had fallen into severe disrepair and some of the local residents were very vocal about how bad their neighborhood had become. Eventually Roc-Mar closed and the entire corner was bulldozed for a strip plaza and Tops market (not necessarily an improvement over what was there). It's a shame that corner was lost to suburban-style development. With a little care and imagination (and loads of work), the houses could have been saved. It's great to see many older buildings finally coming back to life.

What is happening with Mark Goldman's place? Is the Mayor et al still sticking it to him because of his vocal opposition. Such bad, bad politics....

trav>"Is the Mayor et al still sticking it to him because of his vocal opposition"

Does "the Mayor" have influence about liquor licenses?
Isn't the SLA an agency of NYS (controlled by Cuomo who's more aligned with Hoyt et al than with BB's faction)?

Are you accusing City Hall of refusing Goldman a needed city permit? I'm not saying you're wrong - I have no idea. But if you're publicly accusing "the Mayor" of wrong doing, shouldn't some basis to the accusation be mentioned too?

So trav, does no reply mean there's no substance to your comment's claim that Mayor Brown was impeding Goldman's new restaurant? Just a public accusation for the hell of it? But no retraction either? Nice.

its great to see the steady improvements on amherst st. and grant st. if only we could strengthen the connection between them. unfortunately, the highway, bridge, and suburban tops development really function as pedestrian barriers.

I'll bite. Sure Capitalism has its problems, but what are you proposing as an alternative?

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Participatory Economics in conjunction with a government that invests more in our local economy than it does in the economy of other countries.

Participatory economics is an economic system developed to foster six broad values: equity, or fair and just outcomes; solidarity, or caring and mutual respect among all people; diversity of outcomes which would benefit everyone; participatory self-management, or having a say in decisions to the extent that one is affected by their outcomes; efficiency, or not wasting resources; and environmental sustainability, which requires leaving behind stocks of each kind of natural capital as large as those we enjoy today.

Capitalism and the stock market only benefit the few at the expense of the many. It is time for us to look to an alternative like P.E.

Even thought that Tops is a "suburban" type development it is within walking distance for a lot of the residents of that neighborhood and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Tops has not been a very good neighbor here in Black Rock, I think most long time residents prefer Wegmans. Before Tops was built we were served well by the old IGA supermarket on Tonawanda St. IGA was locally owned and operated resulting in a very well managed store that catered to the needs of the neighborhood.

That sucks. I moved to Buffalo about 6 yrs ago so I didn't even know there was an IGA. Why are they such a bad neighbor?

Score: 0 ( 0 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Tops started off on a bad note when they filled and paved the right of way for the Scajaquada Bike Path during construction of the parking lot. The city backed down and basically allowed the bike path to be relocated on the edge of the Tops parking lot rather than in the creek gorge where it was intended.

Over the years Tops has never been very accomodating to the community. A long standing problem has been their inability to manage the shopping carts that are left scattered around the neighborhood. Another issue is litter, Tops doesn't seem to think it is their problem and many times the parking lot is a mess. Tops also seems to feel this location does not deserve the same level of service offered at locations in more affluent areas. Typically only a few cashiers are open and wait time is usually excessive. The inside of the store is not well maintained and expired products are common. Tops just never embraced the community as a good neighbor and has a long record of apathy and neglect.

Blackrocklifer- we have the exact same problem with the Tops on Niagara St. The manager of the store swears to me that the parking lot attendants "would never unlock the wheels", yet I witness them doing it all the time, for patrons who wish to take the carts home (then end up leaving them on the corner or in front of someones house). I used to call the store to let them know where to find the carts, but that usually had a 50% success rate. Now I have a number for a nice hispanic gentleman who you see cruising the westside for scrap metal and he collects them up and gets paid for scrapping them. I once heard shopping carts cost upwards of $400 brand new, so hopefully they will be forced to rethink their relaxed policy on unlocking the wheels. The side of Tops that faces Prospect St is littered with garbage, and the store manager looked at me like I had 3 heads when I asked if he could send some employees out to clean it up. They are truly a bad neighbor.

The issues are the same for the University Plaza Tops. You can find shopping carts abandoned all around our neighborhood. Plastic bags and other garbage float around the neighborhood and no one from Tops seems to care. They also only have a few cashier lines open and long lines at the meat and customer service counters. Unfortunately the nearest Wegmans isn't in walking distance so it is either Tops or Budweys for us.

Tops has some serious management issues. The Tops in both South Buffalo and West Seneca suffer from the same issues. They barely clean the inside of their stores. They are not going to clean the outside. Staffing is always lighter than Wegmans which leads to these issues.

Good news, maybe Fuzzy's New Hinwood will now have a place to "rub elbows with those of elevated socioeconomic status" and avoid contracting "hepatitis".

My wife and I stopped by last night, very nice place. The owner was quite friendly as was the bartender. The interior is like going back to the 1940's, all intact and not chopped up or defaced as is the case in many old bars. Good selection of bottled beer and reasonably priced. Good luck to Greg, and welcome to Black Rock.

Meanwhile back on topic, I too visited last night and was very impressed. The woodwork, bar, and interior looks like it have been very well preserved. The owners did a great job of restoring or cleaning what was "mothballed " many years before.
Really enjoyed seeing the old beer and liquor sings instead of the cheesy crappy neon beer signs the distributors dangle in windows. I'll be back , and especially if they get the kitchen open with the rumor of European /Polish/ Hungarian, Stick to your ribs good home cooking. !

I am stoked to try this place once they start serving food! Beautiful interior from the photos. I have to agree with the comments about Grant Amherst Tops. It is like night and day just going to the Elmwood Tops a few miles away - cleaner, better staff, etc. I'm not sure what their deal is. Wegmans seems busier to me on average by far, and is open 24 hours, yet is always better taken care of. I suppose it's like a lot of things - they assume Black Rock is poor and run down and people will shop there out of necessity no matter what they look like. Wrong, guys! I drive by and I'm someone who hates to waste gas.
