Preparing to Polka: Dyngus Day 2011

Preparing to Polka: Dyngus Day 2011
Though it may seem as though winter will drag on for a bit, Spring is on the horizon.  With that in mind, the organizers of the 2011 Dyngus Day Parade are already seeking out participants and volunteers to help organize this year's celebration.

"The Dyngus Day Parade has become a uniquely Buffalo tradition," explained parade director Bernadette Pawlak. "2011 is a very special year as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of modern Dyngus Day in America. We welcome volunteers to assist in parade preparation as we expect that this will be the biggest Dyngus Day parade in history."

The parade will take place on Monday, April 25 at 5 p.m.  It will make its way through the streets of the historic Polonia District, where spectators will come across Dyngus Day celebrations taking place at the Central Terminal, St. Stanislaus Church, Corpus Christi Church, the Adam Plewacki American Legion Post 799 and the Adam Mickewicz Library and Dramatic Circle.  These events will honor the end of the observance of Lent and the coming of Easter.

Buffalo has a rich tradition of celebrating Dyngus Day, since the first Polish immigrants came to Buffalo in the 1870s.  The "modern" celebration of Dyngus Day, which was organized by the Chopin's Singing Society, began in Buffalo 50 years ago.  Today, Buffalo is considered the "Dyngus Capital of America" due to its large concentration of celebrations. With this year marking such an important anniversary, the organizers hope to make the celebration even better than that of years before.

The parade organizers are expecting to have over 150 participants in this year's parade, as well as 50,000 spectators. Organizers welcome social groups, ethnic organizations, schools, marching bands, polka bands, dancers and performers to join the celebration. Those interested in entering the parade should visit www.dyngusdaybuffalo.com to obtain an application. These applications should be mailed in or emailed to Bernadette Pawlak by 5 p.m. on April 15, 2011.  To mail in, send to Bernadette Pawlak, 54 Arend Avenue, Williamsville, NY 14221.  To email, send to BernadettePawlak@gmail.com.
