Powder Keg Festival 2011

Powder Keg Festival 2011
Earlier today, at the Pearl Street Grill and Brewery, Buffalo's Wing King Drew Cerza officially announced that he would be moving forward with the operations of the Powder Keg Festival. Jeff Empric and I are happy that Drew has decided to run with the festival, thus allowing the two of us to dedicate our energies elsewhere. Our biggest concern was that the festival land a qualified operator - one who was familiar with large-scale urban festivals. Drew was our man.

I spoke to Drew after the press conference regarding some of the change-ups being made to this year's Powder Keg. "I'm excited to carry on the vision," he expressed to me. "We want to build it bigger and better by partnering with companies and organizations such as The Bisons and the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC). It's a whole new attitude with the ECHDC - now that they have reached out to the community, I feel that there is a real synergy with the waterfront. I also think that bringing The Bisons in is great in that it extends the footprint of the festival and brings Pettibones Grill into the mix. That's also where many of the athletic events will take place (in the parking lot). Another exciting event that we have lined up is the Fight for Air Climb. It's a foot race to the top of One HSBC Center (Saturday February 12th at 10am), the tallest building in Buffalo. This is the first big event in the area for the American Lung Association - contestants will raise money for a good cause and have fun doing so (sign up online). We'll have Clear Span heated tents, a Friday night Ice Breaker party, a kids' pavilion, turkey bowling, a snow bunny contest, sledding off The Skyway exit ramp (faster this year), craft beer tasting on Sunday, and a Mark Twain chili cook-off inspired by yet another* Buffalo based movie, Bruce Almighty."

*The idea for the Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival was born when Drew saw the movie Osmosis Jones, where Bill Murray was heading to the then fictional Buffalo Chicken Wing Contest... Drew saw the movie and the rest is history. The Mark Twain Chili Contest is the second movie to inspire a food contest in Buffalo.

Along with the photo you mention that this will be done with the pond hockey tournament and auto show. This shouldn't be a throw away sentence.

All of these events work perfectly together. This weekend makes Buffalo a destination! Lots of things to do and see!

Cerza helps add credibility to this festival which will help with sponsors.

They cover the Pond Hockey too, I don't think BRO has lack of Pond Hockey Coverage. I do agree the combo is terrific together. Not sure how the Auto Show fits in, other than taking advantage of the masses that will be down there. I'd love if they put on a 4x4 exposition, that would be a cool tie-in.

They don't tie in other than it is something else to do. Someone from Toronto can come down see the pond hockey go to the winter festival, stay the night and then go to the auto show the next day.

It is more than just one reason to come.

Niagara Falls is a destination. Buffalo doesn't really have one big thing to draw people in it has a lot of little great things. This weekend will give several big things to do to go along with the smaller stuff.

I love all the new stuff, very excited for this years. I just hope in future years they have a "signature" thing, like last years Ice Maze. I'd love to see an Ice Castle, could be inspired by different things each year, FLW, Grain Mills etc.

Buffalo News, Friday, September 4, 2009:

Donn Esmonde, The Buffalo News columnist who first suggested a national chicken wing festival in Buffalo, is being inducted this weekend into the National Buffalo Wing Festival Hall of Fame.

Writing on Aug. 10, 2001, Esmonde talked about a new movie at the time, "Osmosis Jones," in which a character attends a national chicken wing festival in Buffalo.

Esmonde wondered aloud why there wasn't a real festival like that, suggesting it was time for the city to capitalize on being the place where chicken wings as a delicacy was invented.

"The whole country -- heck, the world -- knows we're ground zero for the chicken wing. Most places even call them Buffalo wings . . . All we've got to do is pick a date, spread the word and wait for the Winnebagos and deep fryers to roll into town."

The column, which had found its way into Drew Cerza 's recycling box, caught his attention while he was cleaning out the garage. A light bulb went on in his head.

"I stopped sweeping and thought, 'That's a great idea. I could do that.' I told my wife, took out a home equity [loan] on the house and I was in," said Cerza , who founded the National Buffalo Wing Festival the following year.

How about a tug of war in the snow with the loosing team falling into slushy snow(better have a warming tent nearby). Or if you really want to make it interesting; instead of slushy snow, how about 50,000 used chicken wing bones, lol (joke).

Another idea I had for sometime now is similar to the Red Bull Crashed Ice Championship. We are a hockey town, it shouldn't be hard to pull off some day. Maybe we could coordinate for their USA tryouts. Its self explanatory with this amazing video:

This would definitely bring people down from Canada. Speaking of which, what kind of marketing can we expect for the Powder Keg to Friends across the river? Hopefully we don't see the same mistakes and missed opportunities as we did with the World Hockey Tournament.

I'd love to have any Red Bull type event. Imagine a slope down Washington with a huge Invert ramp at the end/HSBC.

I would love to see more arts incorporated in to the event. Artist-designed sculptures, live performances (theatrical, video, etc.) I think a little high brow could go a long way.

I'm happy to see the powderkeg festival back this year. It is good to hear they are partnering with Labatt's hockey and the auto show. I went last year with the kids and there wasn't a lot for them to do downtown. The sledding hill was slushy and hard for the little ones to walk up and the other events were a little lame for the bigger kids. My 10 year old daughter was bored to the point of whining to go home all last year. The petting zoo and face painting is fine for 5 year olds, but what about the older kids?

I'd like to see a snowball canon or catapult. Maybe the hiking club could do some snow shoe races or a snow shoe obstacle course? Maybe there could be something for the older kids in the HSBC tower? Something like a game room or movies in the auditorium they have? This would keep the families downtown longer and give those with little kids a chance to warm up.

I'd love to see a cross country ski race or even a 5K foot race next year. I'd also like to see the HSBC arena opened for skating or use the lobby for events. Make this the biggest thing in Buffalo because that's what we really need. You are on to something here, let's make it huge Buffalo HUUUUGGEEE!

Yes it would! The Queen City Roller Girls will be helping out at the festival, so watch for them. But as of now no one has figured out how to be able to have a bout on ice without major risks to the players (more so than in an indoor rink on wheels, that is).

Roller skates on ice wouldn't really work as they'd leave players with very limited mobility and virtually no control over stopping, lateral movements, hitting, etc... which unfortunately would not make for an interesting bout to play in or watch ;)

Having Drew Cerza take over the festival was a genius decision. He is totally committed to this community and is the ultimate organizer. I expect this years' PKF will be the best ever.

I find him self-serving and annoying, and find his dedication to the community no where near the level of genuine passion that Newell has. Drew chases television cameras, Newell seems to care less about things like that. I could live without Drew.

Yea I'm thankful he got the Wingfest going but not sure what the hype about him is. My personal opinion is the Wingfest is poorly run so that reflects on him. The wingfest was long over due, it should have existed before a Hollywood movie gave the idea. We should be embarrassed by that not proud.

It's my understanding that Cerza bought the Powder Keg from Newell (confirmation please). The move to Coca Cola field sets the stage for an admission charge. How Cerza-like.

I've been checking out other Cities Winter Fests, some amazing events. Hopefully we can get inspiration for the future from:

http://www.winter-carnival.com/
350,000 visitors a year
$3.5 - $5 million dollar economic impact to the city of St. Paul and the State of Minnesota

http://www.carnaval.qc.ca/
Visitors spend more than $42.5 million dollars per winter in Québec City, while the Carnival itself generates direct economic spin-offs of $33.6 million a year.

Optimistically, I'd love to see Canalside be built with this in mind, not just the summer water stuff.

Buffalo already has a reputation for Snow, use that as a marketing tool.

I'd give the founders high marks for creating a festival that may have planted a voice in some of our minds that whispers..."get off your ass and go do something outside!" I've found myself shoveling off a 'pond' much more often than in years past (for skating).

Seriously, things may go well, or not so well... but as they say (well, slightly modified), no matter what happens, they can't take that ice maze away from you. That was very cool. And as the years pass, we'll forget about the slush (was there slush?) and remember being down there with our families. Good job men.

This is the direction in which the Powderkeg/Winterfest should head: www.buffalonews.com/city/article343788.ece. Fewer frozen turkeys and "snow kitten" contests, and more grand ice castle and light shows.
