Blue Sky Design is one of my favorite shopping destinations in Buffalo, and my hand goes out to Tyra Johnson for doing something that is so adventurous and refreshing. The interior design and accessory store first caught my attention when Katie Krawczyk covered it back in September (see post). Since that time I have been meaning to stop in for a visit, but it was only this week that I finally made a point to do so. Now that I've toured the store and talked to owner Tyra Johnson, I am going to make sure that I make a point of supporting her venture in the future.
A lot has changed at Blue Sky Design since I first read about the business. Tyra has introduced lines of merchandise that can be found nowhere else in Western New York, and she's done it in a district that is known for many things other than shopping. As Tyra puts it, "I feel like I'm an urban pioneer... I'm proud that I've established my business in the Cobblestone District, but at the same time I miss out on exposure that I would have if I was in a shopping district." That's why I'm writing this follow-up to Katie's original post. If you live at the Lofts at Elk Terminal, then you need to make a point to stop in to Blue Sky Design. If you are a frequent Metro Rail rider, then hop on a train car and take it to the end of the line (waterfront). Most importantly, if you're a fan of 'green' cutting edge products, then Blue Sky Design is a business that will captivate your senses and sensibilities. Even if you're just looking for a cool wedding gift, give this business a try.
Tyra has a real knack for introducing colors and textures into everyday life in a way that can drastically change your living environment. By adding splashes of color with recycled glass pull knobs or introducing industrial materials through utilitarian creations, Blue Sky Design opens our eyes to a world of interior design that you wouldn't expect to find in such a location. Ultimately, the location of Tyra's business suits her style and the store's composition. The industrial nature of the district transcends the raw build-out, the reused displays and the merchandise. Whether you're in the market for cards, wine racks, baskets, bags, soaps, lanterns, doormats, wooden bowls, votives, etc., this is one store that is as much of a pleasure to peruse as it is to purchase.
