Mundo Images Moves To Franklin Street: Environmentally Friendly Gallery Takes Vibrant Photos and Greeting Cards to New Space
By Amanda McLaughlin:

Artist, environmentalist, educator: Ann Peterson does it all.  With a BA in Studio Art and a MA in Spanish Language and Literature, Peterson combines her creative energies with her love of the natural, beautiful, and exotic in her gallery Mundo Images, one of Buffalo's newest and most exciting artistic spaces.  Following a career that included teaching English as a foreign language in Europe and Central America, teaching Spanish in America, leading eco-trips to Central America, working on a biological reserve in the Galápagos, and working with endangered Leatherback turtle programs in Costa Rica and Panama, Peterson created Mundo Images in 2007 to showcase the photography from her many travels (as well as images from Western New York) and as a platform for her environmentally friendly photographic greeting cards; the gallery is described as a "culmination of Ann's love of exploring the world with photography, educating young people, and working to improve the environment."

After a successful 2007 showing at the New York Stationary Show, Peterson's cards are now sold in 40 states and Canada, with her printers located in Allentown.  Mundo Images takes pride in making environmentally friendly decisions, and the vibrant, carefully crafted cards--which are grouped into categories such as Animal Instincts, Food For Thought, Global Inspiration, Irish Wisdom, Love Stories, Mundo Español, Nature's Voice, Season's Greetings, and Spring Celebration--are acid free, yet age resistant and biodegradable, and are printed on FSC certified paper to promote socially beneficial, economically viable, and environmentally appropriate management of the earth's forests.  A portion of each card's sale goes to Conservation International.

Images-Mundo-Buffalo-NY.jpgWhile Peterson has enjoyed success both nationally and locally and has shown extensively through the area, including at the Allentown and Elmwood Arts Festivals, she--with additional public prompting--longed for a space where she could sell her greeting cards, work on her art, have exhibits, and do wholesale orders in one place.  She had utilized a small space on Elmwood for the past year and a half, but quickly ran out of space, and was doing all of the printing, matting, and framing out of her home.  Excitingly, Ann is moving Mundo Images to a wonderful space at 500 Franklin St. in Buffalo, which provides space for her to work on, display, and sell her prints and cards, as well as additional space for storage and wholesale orders, complete, she says, with one of the best window-fronts in Buffalo!  Mundo Images hopes to open at its Franklin St. location on February's First Friday Night and will include Ann's favorite images taken in Ireland, Costa Rica, England, and Western New York.  The gallery plans to have a Grand Opening party in April, in conjunction with First Fridays in Allentown, that will showcase photos of Portugal and Spain taken on a recent (November 2010) trip Ann took with her sister.  Mundo Images is certainly worth a visit--what a fresh new way to start the New Year:  a new space, a way to give back to our earth, and uplifting photography.  Says Peterson:  "The space is a dream come true.  I love what I am doing, I love Buffalo, and am so excited to have a space to create, work, and exhibit."

Mundo Images plans to open this February at 500 Franklin St. in Buffalo.  More information on the gallery can be found at its website mundoimages.com, or call toll-free at 877.236.8636 (28-MUNDO).  Mundo Images' fax number is 716.833.8636.

That is so fantastic-glad to see the space re-used, and to see more gallery concentration in Allentown.

Now, can I make a suggestion to all art (and, frankly) retail spaces in Buffalo: improve your signage. Very, very few organizations go to adequate lengths to announce "we are here" in a clear, noticeable fashion. I am in no way suggesting neon signs, but establishments in and around town could go to greater lengths to let people know they are there. This is branding 101.

When you highlight a new business--as you often do and one of the reasons I read Buffalo Rising--how difficult would it be to provide a link to a Google map for the location? Some other sites do that. It's hard to visualize exactly where something is located from just the street address and your articles often don't provide any other indicators of the specific location. (I know, I could copy the address and go to Google maps myself, but I live in the age of one-click laziness!)

As long as I'm making my first comment here, I'll add that I recently bought a house in the city and find Buffalo Rising an invaluable source for the kind of information I'm interested in! I read BR daily--except when I get turned off by the personal, petty, negative comments and take a "vacation," as it tends to spoil my mood for the day. I read the comments because the commenters often add valuable information. I suppose it would cause too many problems for you to eliminate those comments that merely provide a snarky, negative jab at the writer, the content, or someone mentioned in the article (often with some smug little "insider info" that "non-in-group readers" don't care about) and provide nothing else useful. The personal disputes and petulance are annoying and dimish the experience of the site, but I otherwise find it a uniquely valuable service! I truly appreciate your sharing your time, talents, and efforts; keep up the good work!
