Mayor Byron Brown announced that this week, the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets will be collecting residents' naturally grown Christmas trees in an effort to reduce the costs associated with depositing the trees into landfills. Instead, these trees will be recycled into mulch. This will result in a savings of $60 per ton recycled.
The tree collection will coincide with regular garbage pick-ups. Residents interested in having their tree recycled should place it on the curb alongside their garbage on the regular pick-up day. The trees will be collected separately from the garbage, so they may remain on the curbs for a while until all the regular garbage is cleared. It is preferred that the trees be left un-bagged to help with this process.
The collection will run through January 7. Residents will also have the option of dropping off their tree at one of three locations, should they miss the January 7 deadline. The tree drop-off sites will be collecting until January 14. They will be open Monday through Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. These are the locations for drop-off:
- Cazenovia Park Golf Course parking lot, located South of Seneca Street at the foot of Wildwood
- Shoshone Park parking lot, located North off of Hertel at the foot of Beard
- 1120 Seneca Street, rear parking lot, between Babcock and Smith

The collection will run through Jan 7? This Friday? Too bad this was posted so late- most of the garbage pick-ups for the week have already happened. I wonder what will happen to all the trees that will undoubtedly be out on the curbs next week- will they just be put in with the regular garbage?
