Grand Opening of Second Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Grand Opening of Second Habitat for Humanity ReStore
On Saturday, January 15 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Habitat for Humanity Buffalo will be hosting the grand opening of its second Habitat ReStore.  The new store is located in South Buffalo at 1675 South Park Avenue at the corner of Coster.

"Habitat Buffalo is thrilled to have a new ReStore location in South Buffalo," said Dave Zablotny, Executive Director Habitat-Buffalo. "Our second ReStore will enhance the sustainable funding stream already in place with our store at 501 Amherst Street and will allow Habitat to continue to expand on the work we are doing throughout the city of Buffalo in helping low income families realize their home ownership dreams."

Habitat ReStore's motto is "Donate. Shop. Volunteer."  This location will be the ideal place to fulfill this motto.  The new outlet will provide merchandise that is 100 percent donated, new and gently used.  Customers can find anything from appliances to furniture and books.  The proceeds from all of the sales of this merchandise will go directly into funding for Habitat for Humanity Buffalo.

The store is also a drop-off location for donations. Individuals who wish to donate to habitat can drop off items any time during business hours, which are Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ReStore will also pick up donations for those who call 716-852-6607 and schedule a pick-up.

Since the store first opened on December 7th, the staff has seen a constant and steady increase in the number of customers visiting the location and in the number of pickup donations scheduled.  Habitat for Humanity Buffalo representatives hope that opening this store will help them increase the revenue generated to help build and rehab more homes for low-income families in the city, so that they don't have to rely solely on private donations and mortgage repayments.  They also wanted to locate the new ReStore in South Buffalo specifically to help with restoring one of Buffalo's great neighborhoods.

"The effect that this store opening will have on the community in South Buffalo is very clear," said Evan Quinn, Marketing Manager of the Habitat Buffalo ReStore.  "South Buffalo is one of WNY's closest knit communities, built strongly on a sense of community and civic involvement. For a very long time, local commerce has been lacking specifically in this area. This ReStore location is an attempt to help revive and contribute to the renewal of that sense of community, as well as commerce."

"I grew up on Pries Avenue, which is only 3 blocks down from the new ReStore on South Park, and to see a new business open in this area of South Buffalo is extremely refreshing and renewing from a personal stand point, especially one that will greatly support an organization like Habitat for Humanity Buffalo that does such amazing things every year," said Quinn. "I am very grateful to be able to be a part of it!"

Habitat for Humanity Buffalo has built over 200 homes for low-income families in Western New York since 1985.  As a whole, this organization is considered a "hand up" rather than a "hand out" organization, meaning they expect their prospective homeowners to contribute 500 "Sweat Equity" hours in exchange for their new homes and an interest-free mortgage.  Some of these volunteer hours are spent working in ReStores, like this new one in South Buffalo.

They won't take donated TV's that are greater than 5 yrs old. Apparently humanity can't survive without HD.

There's no resale market for 5 year old TVs. It's just a smart business decision.

They need a Green Roof!
A true "Green Roof System" and not a small section of the roof with plants on it..... as has been the norm of late with people then calling it a green roof!

That huge flat building is perfect for one.

Nice opening today, despite the weather! There was also a nice article in the Home Finder in today's Buffalo News -- I left a copy with someone at the store (perhaps Evan Quinn)--?

Unfortunately, buses were off schedule due to the weather (a "zero visibility snow band" was hitting WNY, according to the radio), so I didn't have the time as I'd hoped to stick around and chat with folks about the store.

I was impressed with the selection at the store. Lots of furniture and home furnishings in addition to construction stuff. While I was there, a guy looking and talking very much like a contractor was on the cell phone with someone gushing about the stock and encouraging his interlocutor to come on down and check it out.

I agree with Dave about the green roof opportunity, and hope that Habitat -- like with their store on Amherst -- will work with the community to improve the facade. But even as it is, they've given South Park a boost by adding to the retail mix of a key South Buffalo corridor.

paint it green - or something!
not complaining - itis a great presence in that area - but PLEASE consider painting it!

Or a living wall would be just as good - living walls prevent grafitti and they buffer the hustle and bustling sounds of a community on a busy weekday. They are also GREEN.
