Designing to Live Sustainably 2011

Designing to Live Sustainably 2011
What is sustainable design and who is practicing it? We know that sustainable design has been a major topic of conversation on BRO in the past, yet businesses, architects and developers rarely incorporate the practice into their projects. There have been a few local examples of sustainable practices that we can point to, but in general the road to build is as inexpensively and efficiently as possible, therefore we continue to see controversial design projects surface that don't take the sustainable concepts into account.

On Friday, January 28th from 6pm-9pm, a design competition will be presented at The Eights Bistro (888 Main Street between Virginia and Allen). The organizers will be calling for architects, designers and anyone else who cares about sustainable living, to discuss potential sites before submitting a work that showcases best practice scenarios. From Designing to Live Sustainably 2011 regarding the preview event:

Designing to Live Sustainably 2011 is an architectural design competition for the Buffalo-Niagara region that focuses on sustainability. We seek entries from a national audience to select a physical location and answer the question, "How would you design this space to be truly sustainable for our region."

A final event will showcase and celebrate both the top three winners chosen by an expert jury along with the people's choice pick. We strive for this competition to catalyze professionals and the public to begin a dialogue on what is created throughout the process.

Sounds like a great segway into Buffalo's "green" zoning code rewrite. Could not be more perfectly timed! The City is, in essence, determining exactly how each neighborhood in Buffalo would be designed sustainably. Be sure to show at the nine neighborhood meetings in late February and early March!

This may be interesting, not only am I wondering who the expert jury is, but also what experts will show up to push their work as sustainable...

More info would be nice - is there a website? I'd like to know who is organizing it (it isn't any group that I'm affiliated with), what are the parameters of the competition, and who will be judging the work? Also, who/what is setting the standard for or defining the "best practice scenarios"?
