99 Fast Food Restaurant

99 Fast Food Restaurant
I don't know why it took me so long to get over to 99 Fast Food Restaurant on Bailey Avenue. Ever since the restaurant closed on Niagara Square, it has been (at least for me) out of sight, out of mind. The last time that 99 was featured on BRO was back in March of 2008... almost three years ago. At that time I made a note to try it - I wonder where that note went? It was a buddy at work who suggested that we indulge ourselves with a bowl of Phở earlier today... that's why I figured that I would resurface the article after eating such a delicious meal.

For some reason, I had it in the back of my mind that 99 Fast Food was more of a take out place. That's why I was surprised to find an ample-sized dining room with full service wait staff. The place looked great! As the previous BRO article mentions, 99 Fast Food serves up a real feast of Vietnamese and Japanese dishes at very reasonable prices. Being a pescetarian, I opted to go with the vegetarian spring roll and the tofu stir fry with tomato sauce. I also ordered, hesitantly I might add, an avocado milkshake to my order... something that I never even knew existed.

My friend raves about 99 all the time. He rarely strays from the Phở, referring to it as the best in Buffalo - he always goes for the raw meat version. Per usual, he was completely satisfied with his 'dish', especially given the opportunity to manipulate it with Sriracha hot sauce, bean sprouts, jalapeños, lime and basil. My dish was more filling than it looked (considering it was vegetarian), which was fine because I walked in with a real appetite. Between the peanut dipping sauce with the spring roll, the delicate tomato sauce and the subtleness of the avocado, 99 had delivered a smorgasbord to my tastebuds.

If you're anywhere near the University at Buffalo South Campus, make a point to stop over at 99 Fast Food Restaurant. You'll enjoy the relaxed atmosphere almost as much as the incredible Vietnamese and Japanese food.

i loved the place they had just off niagara square. it was a real culinary loss for downtown when it was demolished to make way for the new federal courthouse. i sure wish they'd open another downtown location.

I eat here at least once a week. The staff are very friendly and quick to learn your order if you visit often.

Love the pho served with raw beef, though the portion is too huge to finish on my lunch break. Can't recommend the pork with broken rice enough, it is especially great if you order the version that is topped with a fried egg. The Vietnamese coffee is also divine, though for me it is too sweet and rich to order very often.

Fast Food 99 is definitely one of my top ten WNY restos for consistency, value and quality. The kids love it too!

I second Christa's recommendation of the pork with broken rice - delicious marinated, tender grilled pork with a nice dipping sauce (I think it's #35 on the menu). Some of my favorites also include Lemongrass Beef (very spicy) and any of the bun (rice noodles (no broth), with lettuce, carrots, cilantro, peanuts and whatever meat, also served with a dipping sauce.

I wish they would bring back the banh mi sandwiches!

It's amazing how such a restaurant can survive in the Kensington neighborhood. About 25 years ago, the combination of Asian students and staff at UB, and some Vietnamese refugees that settled in the area, resulted in an emerging "Chinatown" along Bailey Avenue on the block between LaSalle and Minnesota. When the area transitioned from a mix of students and predominantly white, lower-middle class city employees, white-collar workers, and UB staff to mostly lower-income African Americans, Bailey Avenue's Chinatown faded away.
