2nd Annual Splash Panic! Skivvies Snowball Fight

2nd Annual Splash Panic! Skivvies Snowball Fight
So you've been looking for an organized snowball fight huh? Throwing snowballs at family members can be fun, but it's even more fun when you can throw them at complete strangers (who like to throw them back). Be prepared to embark on a snow-throwing extravaganza at Bidwell Parkway and Elmwood on Saturday, January 29th from 11:00am - 2:00pm. If three hours of throwing snowballs in skivvies doesn't throw out your arm (or something else), then you're an official winter freak.

The event is brought to you by your friends at Splash Panic!, Elmwood Avenue's funtastic clothing and accessory store (see last year's event). From Slash Panic!:

Concept: Dress warm, but strip down to something less than warm. We encourage undies, but costumes, swimwear, and Hawaiian shirts are definitely needed and welcomed.

This isn't about looking good (can one look good throwing snowballs around in undies during January?), its about having fun! Get on it with your bad self!

Afterwards we will be hitting up Spot coffee for treats and coffee.

How many people did this last year? Because looking at the pics, it seems like around 6.

As a resident of Bidwell Parkway, I object to events that are planned and executed without any thought for the residents or the law. This three hour snowball fight is just the latest example of commercial enterprises treating Bidwell Parkway as an extension of their business property. If these people want to parade about in their underwear and have a snowball fight, why don't they go to Hoyt Lake? It's just a few block away.

Bidwell Parkway is Public Space. Should residents of Nottingham or Parkside be able to dictate that baseball can't be programmed in Delaware park? My guess is that when they bought their house they realized they live across the street from significant public land, just like you did.

YOU LIVE IN A CITY. Go out to a subdivision in Clarence if you don't want to see people outside your window. Or just stop being a selfish grinch.

Yes, Bidwell, Lincoln, Chapin and the others are public land, but they are NOT public parks. Check the City of Buffalo Charter. They are classified as park accessways. They were not designed as parks, but rather avenues to draw people to the parks.

No where in the city charter, that I saw, specifies that your park approaches are to be treated different than a park. So they are only different in name but not function.

Gadfly, It's a public area, not your front yard. You have no control over what people legally do there. I don't think it's illegal to have a snowball fight in one's underwear (and if it is illegal, it would be illegal to do it in Hoyt Lake too). If you are so concerned about people congregating and partaking in recreational activities within eyesight of your front windows, I think you chose the wrong street to live on.

I heard that someones window got busted with a snowball last year and it cost them $3500 to fix. So I don't know. Is it possible to just go and watch some of the girls or does everyone have to get in their underwear and fight.

The first year, the snow wasn't even able to be packed or thrown, we just ran around and throw powder. Everyone can go in there undies, but costumes are welcome and anything else! Also, this isn't a "commercial" event. We do this for fun and to involve who ever wants to be a part of it! And we are very, very respectful of The Parks. We were born and raised here.

The Event is being moved to the Olmstead parks for the Flurrious! Winter Festival. We ensure that it will not be vulgar(no thongs, "stuff" hanging out, and in general nothing that would look less than a swim suit), this year our push is for costumes and Hawaiian shirts. Our wish is to get everyone comfortable and involved. We definitely understand the concerns. Throwing a few snowballs around for 5 minutes(the amount of time we sustained last year) should be a fun event and will not be taken overly serious to the point of injury. All are welcome!

Panic,
I think those negative posts were comedic relief, you should keep it on Bidwell. Great creative promotional idea though.

Ah, and the typical parochial attitude rears it's ugly, backwater face again!

Also $3,500 is a steep deductible on a homeowners policy, and a mighty expensive pane of glass. Why even bother having windows? Who on earth would actually want to look at the poor common folk desecrating Olmsteads land!!

Wow! Don't bend over so easily. This event should not have been moved, their concerns were not warranted. -1

Olmstead may be the most overrated, over-hyped person on making an impact on Buffalo's history....I don't see any genius in anything he has done here...and don't start by mentioning Delaware Park.

You can hardly argue the Parks we have now are anything like what Olmsted envisioned.

Just just throw a Z in there too. For the sake social consciousness. Who cares. Jesus might have preferred his name spelled with two E's to add a certain element catering towards people taking his name in vain.

"this type of behavior is not something I want my young impressionable daughter to see or the venerable minds nearby (i.e. Buff Sem.)."

Dear bowwowwow.... I can't speak for you daughters but, with all respect, the teenaged women at Buff Sem are neither venerable nor vulnerable... not only do the see each other in their underwear on a near daily basis (gym and sports locker rooms)... these chicks are some of the most erudite chicks you can imagine... jaded in the way that so many teenagers are to matters of this sort.

Might as well try to put clothes on the nudes at Albright Knox.

Really...

In fact, it IS illegal to have a snowball fight in the parks or park approaches:

City Charter (the laws of the city) 309-6:

"No person shall engage in any sport, game or amusement or throw, cast, catch, kick or strike a ball or other missile in any park or park approach except upon such portions thereof as may have been designated for the purpose by the Commissioner of Parks"

As this 'event' is sponsored by & for the benefit of a clothing store, it's a commercial activity and possibly a "festival", covered in 309-2:

"All festivals, commercial activities, military and other parades and funeral processions are prohibited in the parks and on park approaches except with the written permission of the Commissioner of Parks"
