As we all know, the year end holiday cluster keeps retailers happy and active. The same goes for our musician friends, singers especially. They do double and even triple duty trying to keep up with the public demand for carols, hymns, oratorio, popular winter tunes and other musical merriment.
Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus will be punching the holiday time clock as well as hitting high notes throughout the month. The all male chorus, seventy voices strong and approaching its tenth anniversary, maintains a performance history of consistently high quality as well as a distinguished record of community embassy. The usual BGMC schedule includes semi-annual concerts, usually in June and December.
For December 2010, BGMC brings us Sounds Of The Season. Music from many eras and many cultures and of many styles are sampled whenever GBMC plans a concert. Christmas, Hannukah and Kwanza are each acknowledged through music in Sounds Of The Season along with winter songs lively enough to keep circulation percolating in the cold weather.
True to BGMC style, the program will offer more serious music in the first half, lighter fare in the second. Throughout, songs will feature sacred music of various eras and varied denominations. Non‑religious selections range from traditional songs, pop, folk, Broadway and beyond.
Voices lifted in "Hallelujah" are likely to be classically George Frideric Handel or contemporaneously Leonard Cohen. You might even here movie theme songs fit in there somewhere.
With Sounds Of The Season, BGMC welcomes David Bond, D.M., as their regular accompanist. Dr. Bond is well known for his 25 years of service as organist and choirmaster at First Presbyterian Church Buffalo. BGMC's token female artist provides more than token service in shaping the group's artistic integrity. Barbara Wagner has been BGMC's artistic director since the group was founded in 2001. Wagner is a seminal figure in Buffalo music for more than fifty years. Many musical ensembles, houses of worship and schools boast historic or ongoing affiliation with her.
Sounds Of The Season will be presented three times in the coming week and in three different locations allowing you to enjoy this concert either close to home or while visiting one of the region's landmark buildings... a vintage movie house, a modern concert hall or a century old Gothic church.
Oh... and if your Bing Crosby 78s or King Family LPs are a bit worse for the wear, you can update you collection of holiday music with BGMC's CD Hope for the Holidays, a recording of the chorus December 2009 concert. CDs of prior concerts are sold after concerts as well as on-line.
Sounds Of The Season advance ticket purchase is always recommended. Tickets are available online at www.buffalogaymenschorus.com or call 716-883-1277.
