Raising The Bar on Chippewa

Raising The Bar on Chippewa
There's nothing like a plug from MSNBC to boost your business's morale. Not that The Chocolate Bar owner William (Bill) Panzica needed the extra boost - you see, Chocolate Bar just may be the unsung hero when it comes to restaurants and bars on Chippewa. The nightlife strip, notorious for its late night escapades, is also home to a number of successful bars and restaurants, and from the sounds of it The Chocolate Bar is busy raising an entirely different bar. Take a look at the video (see below) produced by MSNBC and chances are that your view of The Chocolate Bar will be elevated - no matter what you thought of the business previously.

Not only is Bill's business up... it's literally through the roof. The best part about this success story is the hope that it gives to the rest of the street and downtown Buffalo. It goes to show that with the right business formula, a downtown business can flourish. Customers are willing to travel for creative food and atmosphere executed the right way, along with reliable service. The Chocolate Bar does have the advantage of being attached to the Hampton Inn, but at the same time I mostly see the locals supporting it. It is also interesting to note that there is no parking lot for customers to park in. Success stories like The Chocolate Bar should send signals to others that even in this down economy there are people out there looking to spend money if the offering is worth it.

Good for them. I have been enjoying the chocolate bar since they opened and I'm glad to hear they're experiencing this type of success.

Say what you will about Benderson. You have to admit they did a great job attracting high quality tenants to that hotel.

Let's hope they do the same at the waterfront.

Actually the Hampton lists both Chocolate Bar and Papaya as restaurants for the hotel. I believe you can reach at least one (if not both) without going outside. -9

How do I get -6 comments, lol. The Chocolate Bar has nothing to do with the Hampton. Im pretty sure (not 100%) that its not even the same building?

Chocolate Bar, Papaya, Salsaritas and Subway all sit below the Hampton Inn. Maybe next time check it out before you insist you are right.

Dude, burch. Most people making stupid comments on here aren't completely and obvliviously stupid. But your comment is both completely and obvliviously stupid. Not only did you initially make an incorrect comment, but you followed up supporting said comment. It takes alot of something to be that wrong. Use google next time one or two people refute your comment before you come out again guns-blazing. I just shake my head at how stupid you are. Chippewa and Delaware. It's a prominent intersection, it is difficult to not notice it. Check it out sometime.

It is 100% in the same building as Hampton Inn. There is even a back entry through the lobby.

Wife and I ate there a month or two ago. food was completely underwhelming, imo. But a smart business model: place was loaded with women (girlfriends having a night out, girlfriends having a staggette, etc.). I'll eat somewhere savory instead next time, but there is definitely a market for this idea. Good for the entrepreneur. Hope he makes it big.

Maybe you and your wife are just underwhelming people? Chocolate Bar is more of a Martini, and desert bar than a fine dining establishment.

Wow BurchJP, since you obviously don't even know were it is how can you slam others that do AND been there? Truth be told, it is nothing special. Just looks better considering the two bit bars surounding it and the sevice is just so so. Cakes are good though.

HAHAHA!

Well, personally I find Beth impressive, so i won't speak on her behalf, but as for myself I can proclaim with certainty and clarity that I underwhelm very many people!

don't see what that has to do with my tastebuds, though . . .

Well, we're food snobs so we're hard to impress, culinarily speaking. Even their desserts were waaay disappointing to us. If you promote yourself as a 'chocolate' restaurant, at least have decent desserts. The crepes? Sugary tastlessness. For god's sake, at least splurge and serve decent ice cream. If they asked me, I'd tell them to hire somebody from Dolci to revamp the desserts. They're not likely to ask.

But maybe none of that matters. Because, like I said, the place was packed. With women. It shocked me. Don't know why it would have. Pretty simple equation:

Chocolate+Food+Chocolate flavored alcohol=women in the door.

Amazing no one thought of it earlier. It's a money machine!

Lol, I like how you say give it up, and call it a day and you're still commenting at 1 in the morning. Just to toss the last point in here I text my good friend who works at Papaya and she told me that they are in the same building but they are not owned and do not have any business affiliation (ie Hampton Employees get discounts etc), but do not pay them any rent or give them and percentage of profits. Plus there is no direct access from Papaya or Chocolate Bar into the Hampton. But there is a hallway that connects there side of the building into the Hampton.

No one ever claimed they were affiliated. You originally stated that Chocolate Bar isn't located in a hotel. Everyone corrected you stating that, yes, actually it is located in the same building as the Hampton Inn. End of story.

I wonder how they got the use of that name. There is a local chain of Chocolate Bars here in Houston and I saw one in St. Louis as well so I am sure there are other places using that name around the country. I wish the owner luck because his success is good for Buffalo.

Well I apologize about the ice cream. I misremembered. She was disappointed in the dessert, mostly for the fudge being cold and not anything special, but the ice cream itself was better than I was remembering. She's had better, she says, she wasn't wowed, but it was better than I characterized. Sincere apologies. (She shares my opinion of the crepes and other food we had.)

I am the owner of Chocolate Bar and just read the reviews of article and thank you for feedback!
I want to invite your partner and yourself to Chocolate bar to tour and watch our ice cream production etc followed by a dinner on us!. We have a large commercial ice cream "batch freezer" that we use to make our ice cream. You will get a kick out of it and hopefully change your mind (on fudge too I think its best I ever had!) We have even helped out Dolci when their facility was being renovated and they produced their products at the Chocolate Bar (Our Kitchen is over 6000 sq feet!). Hopefully at second glance our food (though not Hutches) will please you as well. We are not trying to be anything other than what we are
and hopefully carve our niche and serve quality products in a fun environment
Please accept our "Golden Ticket"

That's a very classy response and I appreciate it.

I was feeling like a jerk even before your post. I was wishing I had stopped my comments with the observation about ratio of customers. But especially for misremembering the ice cream. On the other hand, anyone reading this will balance the comments and no harm done, I hope.

You mention Hutch's, which is one of our favorites (and Tabree and Rue and Left Bank, etc.) and you're right: you're not trying to be them, and nothing wrong with that.

Sorry the crepes left us flat. I remembered dissatisfaction with the ice cream dessert and it's strange how that dissatisfaction colored my memory of all of it. I was surprised by defenders of your ice cream and I'm glad to have my memory jarred. After talking it over last night I remember that the ice cream was, as everyone attests, good. But she was very annoyed that the fudge was cold--like refrigerator cold. It might be very fine fudge. It might be the best. But isn't it hard to taste any fudge cold? You don't like it warm? I'm really curious: you serve it separately anyway, in its own ramekin, so why wouldn't you serve the fudge part warm and gooey instead of cold and thick? Just curious.

At any rate, thanks for your earlier response. Best wishes to you for your business. I do think it's a killer business model, from a franchising perspective. And you're obviously doing something right because you are very busy. Congrats!

Please accept our offer our chef is excited about making ice cream (and dinner)with both of you!
Our fudge is hot and it is not served on side (chocolate however was on side with a crepe??) It is our recipe and quite honestly the best hot fudge i ever had it stretches once it hits ice cream unlike any i ever had. We use Cocoa Barry chocolate which is considered the finest. Oh Well we would be honored to have you as our guests!!!
Now to the crepes I can explain how we have/are striving to make them better while the batter we make is a true Parisian recipe our execution and preparation is somewhat compromised on Fridays and Saturdays which not a excuse is a policy we put in place to help the kitchen out on weekends .
All your comments were well intentioned and by no means considered anything other than that! Please allow us to show off what we do we would be honored

Your response had me confused, so I had another discussion with Beth. My bad: Her point was that the chocolate sauce SHOULD have been served on the side. As soon as it touches the ice cream, of course, it cools down. It's hard to get it to the customer still warm. She thought it would be wiser to separate the hot and cold and let the customer blend them. In her case the fudge was stone cold by the time we got it--literally like it was in the fridge. She was annoyed.

In retrospect, this is undoubtedly the same issue we had with the crepes. They were room temp. Probably they were intended to be served warm. Having never been to your establishment before we simply took for granted that the temperatures were as intended.

It was a very busy night. Our waitress doubtless had ten things to do and wasn't able to serve them when they were ready.

I was trying to recall the entrees, but Beth reminded me that we ate elsewhere and came to Chocolate Bar for dessert and coffee. While we waited for the desserts we perused the dinner menu, but we didn't eat there.

No need to roll out the red carpet. We appreciate the effort and generous gesture. We'll give you another try (after the holidays). I'll give you feedback after that. Cheers!
