Niagara Seafood to open the first of the year

Niagara Seafood to open the first of the year
As of the first of the year, the West Side will be home to a very substantial seafood market. Owner Michael Nguyen, along with his wife Chuyen, are in the midst of renovating a 2700 sq.' storefront into what will become a seafood lover's paradise. The market will feature frozen fish, canned fish, bottled fish sauce, packaged fish treats, hot fish meals, wrapped raw fish and will even showcase two flatscreen TVs set to broadcast menu items and specials, as well as seafood preparation tips and techniques. A third flatscreen will be dedicated to the soothing oceanic sights and sounds of a stunning IMAX 'Deep Sea' video. Customers will be able to sit and relax at a cafe-style seating area while waiting for their orders - a seating area that will ultimately become an eat-in restaurant.

Michael and Chuyen are no strangers to the food market world. Michael's father, Huy, opened the first Asian market, called A Chau, on Bailey Avenue back in '92. From there the Nguyens opened a second location, called A'Chau, on Niagara Street five years later. The Niagara Street location, which Michael now manages, became so successful that the next logical decision was to open a third market dedicated solely to seafood. "A Chau seafood sales had climbed so significantly," Michael told me. "There was no room to expand in our storefront. By purchasing a building across the street (also on the corner of Rhode Island), we could expand seafood items in the new shop while freeing up space for additional market items in the old location."

One look around at all of the freezers, hot food cases and the packaged goods aisles, and it is easy to see that there must have been a great need for a dedicated seafood market. Michael told me that he is expecting two enormous fish tanks to arrive today that will add to the ambiance of the business. While those tanks will be purely for show, a third tank will eventually be added so that customers can actually point to live fish that they want for dinner. By opening day, Niagara Seafood will be stocked with fish snacks, nori, frozen cuttlefish, goby, mussels, squid, canned baby clams, sushi products, tilapia (for fish fries) and hundreds of other fish-related foods and products.

The Nguyens would like to invite all BRO readers to their grand opening on January 1st. At 11:30am on that day, four dragon dances will commence and limited time market specials will be offered, including $7.99 a pound live lobsters, 10% off purchases with a mention of Buffalo Rising, and for every $50 spent, the customer will get a free half gallon of Simply Orange Juice. Niagara Seafood will also sell to the restaurant industry, and offer bulk sales to consumers.

This place sounds amazing...finally a seafood market near home that is not a supermarket!!! I wish them all the best. I can't wait to stop in and buy some fish!

This looks good. The article doesn't mention the availability of fresh seafood on ice or even more significant, having tanks of live seafood. It would be awesome to have live striped bass, Dungeness crab, lobster, eels, etc.

I wish them the best. An Chao on Bailey is a great store. I don't know if the family also owns Pho99 restaurant on Bailey. Delicious food.

These types of businesses make Buffalo an enjoyable place to live.

Many years ago, this was the home of Tirone's Market, an Italian food destination, similar to what Guercio's is today. Before relocating to this site, Tirone's was on the corner of Prospect and Hampshire. Great childhood memories of a truly walkable neighborhood. It is heartwarming to see another generation of immigrants making their mark on the area.

This sounds incredible - I will certainly be there!!

Does anyone know if they will be abiding by sustainable harvest guidleines and practices for their seafood? Similar to a recent story about Wegmans seafodd manager and his works with international groups that provide sustainable seafood.

That would make this new business one of a kind. I would DEFINTELY use them weekly if they could show that their products from our oceans are sustainably harvested and managed.

There are so many fish in the sea - meaning "limited" and not akin to the old adage.

I would gladly pay the extra $$ as well.

This sounds amazing! Any word on sushi grade fish? I've been struggling to find something other than blocks of tuna and salmon. Seems like our only options thus far are mail order, or frequent trips to Toronto... both of which get pricey in a hurry.

Last year I commented here that the Lower West Side will be the "destination" some day because of the cultural diversity.
Looks like it is happening faster than even I thought.
The new bakery on West Ferry and Hoyt is wonderful too.

AnChau store in Bailey has nothing to do with this store. I don't know how much they get pay to write this story but they should know the real story. Anchau store has never owned by Huy. They should go the the city & find out who is the real owner. Do not mess up

An Chau on Bailey has nothing to do with these people, the editor better check their facts before posting these crap! As a matter of fact, these people get their stuff from An Chau! don't believe me, you can go and check it out yourself. An chau pricing is always at least 15% less than A Chau....Check the price and you would know!!!!

Went there today and grabbed some crab noodle soup and pho to go. It was very nice inside. The owners were nice and tried to help out with any questions we may have had. The pho was fun to take home and 'assemble' Definitely would go back again.

Also, kind of a small note but they have huge octopi. I know you can get octopus pretty much anywhere these days but if you are looking for large big tentacles or just need a lot, this would be a good place to swing by.
