New York Gets Some Extra Funding For High-Speed Rail

New York Gets Some Extra Funding For High-Speed Rail
Thanks to the efforts of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, New York was recently allocated an additional $7.3 million in high-speed rail funding.

The funding was a portion of the stimulus money originally awarded to Ohio and Wisconsin for building high-speed rail systems.  The newly elected governors of these two states chose to turn down this money, leaving it in the hands of the Department of Transportation.

"If other states don't want their high-speed rail money, New York will take it because we understand that high-speed rail is an essential element to our transportation system and a good rail system is an important element of our national security," said Slaughter.  She reached out to the U.S. D.O.T. Deputy Secretary John Porcari and U.S. D.O.T. Secretary Ray LaHood, with whom she had previously collaborated on high-speed rail.

The D.O.T allocated the surplus money to 13 states.  New York ranked fourth amongst these states, receiving twice the amount of funding that was given to Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oregon, North Carolina, Iowa and Indiana.
"I've been advocating for this extra money for New York for months," said Slaughter. "I'm delighted that New York is able to take advantage of this additional stimulus money to build high-speed passenger rail stretching across the state."

Slaughter has made high-speed rail a priority in her work.  She hopes these efforts will lead to improvements to existing rail and the addition of a third track for passenger trains.  This, in turn, would result in more efficient travel and an increase in commerce and tourism potential.

7.3 mil is about enough for 1/2 mile of light rail. awesome.

Or we can keep complaining about how nothing ever gets done as the stimulus money goes toward helping new england states in continuing to trump new york in infrastructure. Its money. shush.

Cali got $624 million and Fla got $342 from the Wisconsin and Ohio reallocation (in addition to the hundreds of millions they had already received). NYS got $7 million.

Of course take it. If those guys dont want it fine. But this just reinforces that NYS still isnt on the ball enough to warrant enough money to build a mile of track. Its like getting a 30% on a test. Sure, its not a zero, but not exactly something to be proud of.

Yes, Im in a bit of a mood today.

It's better than nothing! I'm glad LaHood is holding the governors-elect of Ohio and Wisconsin to their words, and moving the rail money to other rail projects in states that are enthusiastic about rail instead of letting them divert it to highway spending.

It sucks for the people of Ohio and Wisconsin, though. Talgo is shutting down their manufacturing plant in Milwaukee (about 125 jobs) because of Walker's decision to reject the federal rail funds.

Sean, there are already four trains a day from NYC to Buffalo. The trip takes about 8-9 hours, but it's relaxing and definitely beats being stuck in a motel overnight.

After being stuck in NYC for 30 hours because of mid-west storm. I really wish we had that HS rail line.

Yeah, because rail NEVER gets affected by snow. (rolling eyes here)

This whole debacle is a waste. of. time. Look at Louise acting like its free money to just be given out to whomever. And wow, we got a whole 1% of it? Rock on, NYS.

HSR will always be a joke full of political pork-barrel punch lines in the USA. Period.

Well unless a tree falls on the tracks snow isn't really an issue. I just spend 2 weeks traveling around Germany through some very heavy snow at times and all the trains functioned just fine.

It would be nice to see some focus put on a downtown station. When talking about high speed rail "millions" don't get you much. Hopefully the money can be focused on tangable benefits now that look to the future when a higher speed rail line can be realized.

Unfortnately I think the first truely high speed rail line will be from NYC to Boston (Amtrak proposed a month ago) or LA to Vegas.

NYC to upstate will probably get a dedicated line that reduces transit time, but isn't truely high speed rail. Thus high(er) speed rail line.

I agree, we should be pushing for a much more improved Downtown Amtrak Station for the High Speed Trains to stop at. Dropping everyone off at Depew only makes things complicated. It's in the middele of nowhere, many coming in not knowing the fact they are NOT actually in Buffalo and think, "what a dump", or 'what a hick town'. If we really want to make improvements and do this RIGHT, make the Buffalo stop in BUFFALO!!!!!

I just don't see rail of any speed being successful, particularly in WNY. I think there are far better uses of that money. I'd rather see that 7 mil go towards funding the culturals so that dickbag Collins can see their benefits.

Considering that many trains in NY are completely sold out during the summer and during holidays like Thanksgiving, I would suggest that passenger rail is already pretty successful, given its limited schedule and capacity.

Amtrak's big problem right now is not a lack of passengers, but a lack of enough equipment to serve them all.

Another $7 million is not going to make for any significant progress on HSR in NYS. All the initial funding will go just to add in the second track and basic existing station improvements. But just as NY needs to better prepare itself to be better positioned to receive future funding, Buffalo must do the same so that it gets focus from NYS. The best thing Buffalo could do right now on that front is get the NFTA to agree that extending light rail to the Airport is on the table. The city and county have already expressed their support for making Buffalo Central Terminal the station for high speed rail. The light rail connection would then bridge the two transportation hubs with downtown.

Since we are all saying what 7 mil would be good for - 30k for lighting and paint for the downtown station, then the rest toward an additional departure in the late afternoon/early evening.

The funding should be focus on the replacing the Exchange Street station. It is ill situated, much too small (I think fire code capacity was violated last time I was there) and in deteriorating condition. And for god's sake, not even open on evenings or weekends? Are you kidding me? What an embarrassment to Buffalo. Doesn't the city own the facility?

And it is dangerous. If you take the train and your ride is not there you could be stuck standing outside at night. They need to build a new station and preferably have it be a shared one with NFTA rail and bus service.

more liberal earmark money that can never serve a purpose or help anyone but the politicians on the other end taking it - however, its still coming out of our pockets

doesnt she and the rest of her commy friends realize its these are the types of things that made america turn against them

I have to agree with some of the comments. This money is so insignificant to the size of the project that it will never get used for what it's intended for. This is most certainly an earmark, and we are paying for this to go nowhere. The fact is that the money should have gone to something more productive within the government, which isn't too many things at this point...

Infrastructure is the most overlooked thing in the country right now, and needs to be taken more seriously. Throughout the history of this country infrastructure projects have brought us out of recessions and depressions (Hoover Dam, Highway system, to name a few) Our infrastructure ranks as one of the worst among industrialized nations (like our education system), and that is embarrassing. The rail system would be a fix for many things. Create short-term and long-term jobs, take trucks off the road making the roads safer AND last longer (due to the massive abuse trucks put on our roads). The jobs lost in trucking would be shifted to the rail system.
