It's A Wonderful Life With The Arts

It’s A Wonderful Life With The Arts
The holiday season is as good a time as any to give back and help others in their time of need.

Next Thursday, December 30th, from 4 to 9 p.m., the "It's A Wonderful Life With The Arts" mixer and fundraiser for local arts and cultural organizations will be taking place at the 464 Gallery.  The event will be in support of the 33 cultural organizations whose funding was recently cut.

Sue Cholewa, Marcus L. Wise and Empower Arts Buffalo are hosting this event in order to not only help raise money, but also to raise awareness about the situation that these organizations are in.  They hope to open up an ongoing discussion of how to approach this issue and develop a plan of action. "The 33 culturals that have been cut are like George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life," they said. "They have given us much joy without asking for much in return and now it's our time to give back."

Those attending are welcome to give a tax-deductible donation of any amount, large or small.  Any donation to these organizations, no matter what size, is appreciated. The proceeds will be divided evenly between the interested art groups. There will also be an opportunity to meet with representatives of the 33 cultural organizations, as well as some other local artists from Buffalo and Western New York.

Aside from donations, there will also be a raffle to help raise extra money.  Four Buffalo Sabres 100-level tickets will be raffled off, which will include passes to the Harbor Club. There will also be food and refreshments provided.

For more information, call (716) 983-2112 or email MINDWEB.us@mac.com.

It is not clear to me-into what org would I be making a donation (so that it is "split" among the 33 organizations")?

This seems like a fun and cool event.
This is what the Art Community should do instead of expecting Taxpayers to foot the bill. Irish Classical charge about 40 bucks for a ticket, well worth it, and it really wouldn't make much difference paying 5 bucks more.

I just think reports of the Arts demise are greatly exaggerated. The Arts are strong and will find a way to get by.

Travelrrr, you may choose the organization of your choice to donate to, or if you prefer, you can make a donation to be spread out among the culturals.

JM- I agree with your sentiment of resiliency, but the arts and culturals need and deserve all the support they can get. They support our city, shouldn't the city do the same?

I hope everyone can make an appearance, however brief. Happy Holidays!

If you are planning to donate to all the cultural groups at one time, we do not have an umbrella organization for this event. We are offering 2 options to donate. You can purchase raffle tickets for cash for one of our many raffle prizes.(We have 2 sets of 100 level Sabres tickets,a $300 dollar value exterior/interior car detail from CarStar, 2 tickets to the Kavinoky theater etc.)The money collected will be divided equally among the groups. The other option is to write individual checks to one or more of the culturals. This can then be used as a tax deduction for 2010. If you are a cultural that has not been contacted or you want to donate a raffle prize please e-mail me @ scholewa2003@yahoo.com. The response to this event has been amazing! Buffalo is truly a generous and caring community! Hope to see you on the 30th!

Didn't the city cut all funding for the arts under Masiello? That funding hasn't been restored has it? And yet the arts still go on. What makes you think that the cuts by the county will be the end to arts? Why aren't you putting pressure on Byron Brown to restore all funding or to make up the difference left by the county? The arts in Buffalo benefit Buffalo more than the suburbs, right? So let's push the Mayor to pick up his fair share of the costs.

Of course the city benefits the suburbs by providing culture, arts, nightlife, and a multitude of other activities. The suburbs provide little if any benefit to the city so lets push suburban governments to pick up their fair share of the costs.
