Design for Key Medical Campus Site Unveiled

Design for Key Medical Campus Site Unveiled

A contemporary design for Ciminelli Real Estate Corporation's planned medical office building in the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus has been unveiled.  With an estimated cost of  $80 million, the seven-story, 350,000 square foot building, will be the largest  privately-developed building in the medical campus as well as one of the largest single buildings undertaken by Ciminelli.  It will front the east side of Main Street from High to Goodrich streets.

Plans for the signature project include ground floor retail, three underground levels of parking, as well as a LEED Gold level certification.  Kideney Architects is designing the building.   A connection with the nearby Allen Street light rail platform to the building through an underground gateway is possible.

Women & Children's Hospital outpatient surgery center will anchor the building and occupy 65,000 sq.ft.  UBMD, a physicians group associated with the University at Buffalo, will take 60,000 sq.ft.  According to Ciminelli officials, Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo are negotiating for additional space in the building.

The project site is currently occupied by surface parking and a one-story medical building that will be demolished. The eastern portion of the block closer to Buffalo General Hospital has been earmarked for future development.

A public hearing is scheduled to be held by the Buffalo Planning Board on Dec. 21st. with a final vote not expected until January. Construction is expected to begin in March once approvals are obtained.  LP Ciminelli will be construction manager.

oh man that will look so much better than whats there now. i do have a question though, not in a smart ass way. i can't help but notice all of these new medical buildings look really similar, is there a reason for that? Does something about the design/layout benefit the practices, or is this just a design thats popular in architecture right now?

Awesome building. It's going to hugely improve commercial activity on that strip of Main.

For a primarily suburban developer, Ciminelli sure looks like he knows something about urban design.

This is a great signature building, its def something that you can build around as a model of a modern forward thinking Medical Campus.

Love it in every way. A+ Precisely what the area needs. Can someone post some pictures of the UB/Kelida vascular building. I can see it in the background!

Hey ECC and your boring medical north campus plans.... are you paying attention?

Buffalo General is going to start to look a bit dated now.

To all the negatrons who insist that we (preservationists) poo-poo new design, I say WRONG....if it is quality, which this is, you won't hear any discontent.

This is exciting and I, too, would seriously question ECC if they did not stay downtown--they would be doing their students a disservice.

And the best part? "Underground parking"! No more surface parking lots in downtown Buffalo.

All of the renderings are at night... What will this look like during the day? Usually the glass has a certain tint to it. Maybe they haven't decided yet?

Also I'd like to note that it is very interesting that development at Larkin and Medical Campus seems to be not affected at all by the downtown office space worries that are going on as a result of Seneca One/HSBC.

Although the impending hsbc building issues are concerning it is nice to see that the city is diversifying!

Looks great. Nice to see the architects aren't using tinted glass. The clear glass looks great.

This was posted elsewhere. The new building will fill the block up to a little east of Washington. They are proposing a long elevated skybridge to connect with Buffalo General. This will be removed when/if they build on the parking lot on the east half of the block.

I think we should fight to have that vinyl-sided roof, on the little structure to be demolished, re-used! (kidding, kidding)

The pace of growth in the medical corridor is astounding! It really feels like a turning point in WNY's long slow transition.

Somehow, someway, though, the new shiny medical corridor is going to have to do more to integrate with its neighbors..to the East (what a huge discrepancy in reality)...to the West (many businesses on Allen feel there is not enough flow into their neighborhood), etc. It can't be this bubble in the middle of the city.

not looking to start any trouble, but why should the new shiny medical corridor be the one to initiate the integration?? why shouldn't the neighborhoods be the ones to raise their level to match whats going on at the medical campus?? allentown is already a great neighborhood, and the fruit belt has a ton of potential...get the neighborhood clubs and the reverend, i mean the councilman darius pridgen together to see if they can work out a strategic plan to tie these neighborhoods together...the seeds are in place...who wants to nurture them???

Because the Medical Campus is being planned and largely constructed with Public Dollars. It is a public responsibility to ensure that money is equitably spent, and its more than reasonable that the adjacent neighborhood, which will also experience the brunt of the Medical Campus' development impacts (traffic, built environment, noise, etc..), reap some of the benefits of the campus. What are we investing in these projects for if they don't have highly positive impacts upon the local community? Hopefully its not just so some new doctor can live in Spaulding Lake...

public dollars which means our tax dollars...i am for my tax dollars creating long term jobs, infrastructure improvements...i do not see how it becomes a responsibility of the taxpayers to ensure the surrounding neighborhood is also taken care of with our tax dollars...the fruit belt already has new builds, with what i'm guessing are paid for by tax dollars, new sidewalks...this neighborhood also has the benefit of having a new pool of jobs within walking distance...keep in mind, not all jobs being created here are just research..there are plenty of jobs in housekeeping, building maintenance, food service, parking, etc. being created that directly benefits the residents in the neighborhood, you can walk to your job, how awesome is that???

now i'm not sure exactly how you would like to see money spent on the neighborhood, like maybe grants for homeowners to paint their homes? storefronts to be rehabbed? of course all on your dime, seeing it's our tax money we're talking about..

The Fruit Belt, for so long a poor and marginalized neighborhood, does not have the capacity to "raise their level" alone. Millions of dollars of public money is going into the Medical Corridor. Some of it should be spent in the neighborhood.
