Construction Watch: BMFCU Expansion

Construction Watch: BMFCU Expansion

Work to expand and give a new look to the Buffalo Metropolitan Federal Credit Union at 62 S. Elmwood Avenue is nearly complete.  The formerly nondescript one-story building has gained a new 5,440 sq.ft. second floor, an updated facade, and an additional drive-thru lane.  It is located directly behind City Hall.

Architectural firm R.W. Lawson Associates designed the project.  The building has brick veneer, precast concrete, manufactured concrete stone and aluminum windows with smoked glass.

The Buffalo Metropolitan Federal Credit Union is open to persons who live, work, worship, or attend school in, and businesses and other legal entities located in Erie County.

What happend to the 'NEW' city development code update??? I thought building anything that looked 'Suburban' was a no no? I knew that whole announcement of an updated 'code' was more of a code for 'b.s'.

This actually looks much better in person and I don't think it looks suburban at all. The use of real stone (as opposed to EIFS) looks pretty good.

Who cares. Looks uber better than what it did. I'll take it.

It looks much nicer than it did before so I see no reason to complain.

It's still suburban since it has upfront parking. And this is right behind City Hall too. I see our 'leaders' still don't 'get it'.

It looked like vomit before. Now it looks unvomitlike. Get over it.

agreed... looks like a Chipotle should be there instead of a bank... But looking at their website it doesn't appear that are that concerned about their image. It looks like a high school project not a bank's website.

Yes, instead of putting a second floor and re-cladding the building, they should have picked it up and moved it to the curb, so they the renovation of an EXISTING building didn't look suburban.

It is 100% better than before and is actually very nice looking.

It's actually more offensive to me because at least the former version wasn't trying to be anything more than it is. It is quirky and ugly. This, however, is new, suburban and ugly.

Come on Mayor Brown...let's get that zoning/design code enforced. This does not belong in a downtown center.

I'm clearly in the minority here but I was pleasantly surpised to see the real stone finishes they opted to use instead of EIFs (dryvit). No one made them use a higher end material so I give them props for doing so. I really do not find any problems with the design given they are a small bank RENOVATING an existing building. It's not like this was some historic building or someting, it actually compliments city hall pretty well all things considered.
