Canal Side Call for Submissions

Canal Side Call for Submissions
The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation is looking for submissions from parties interested in contributing to short term/long term cultural amenities, activities and attractions. This sounds like an open ended solicitation designed to get the ball rolling at the Inner Harbor. Since day one there have been complaints that there has been little community participation, and amenities have been few. This past summer we did see some kayak and bike rentals, an increase of boat activity thanks to Buffalo Boat Share and The Buffalo Maritime Center, as well as yoga classes held at the Commercial Slip, and of course a couple of concerts. There was also the exciting addition of the Spirit of Buffalo. Now it's time to take it a step further... to get creative and submit the various ideas that have been bandied about as of late. Submission details are below:

To submit a proposal, please complete either Application 1 (short-term) or Application 2 (long-term).  These forms are available at www.eriecanalharbor.com.  Applicants should submit one (1) electronic copy of the completed application (in PDF format) to ECHDC via e-mail (eriecanalharbor@empire.state.ny.us) by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 1, 2011.  In addition, for those expecting to submit a proposal, an Information Session will be held at ECHDC on January 12, 2011 at 3:00 pm.

Your organization may, if interested, submit both Application 1 and Application 2.   Please remember to keep the applications distinct, as Application 1 is for activitives, programming, events and/or festivals, while Application 2 is for a permanent presence, site amenities and/or facility.

Selection Process

Proposals will be reviewed by members of the Canal Side Cultural Steering Committee and ECHDC.   Proposals will be considered based upon the applicant's ability to demonstrate:

• Relevance to the Story of Buffalo*
• Relevance to the Waterfront
• Relevance to local culture and/or arts
• Educational value
• Ability to draw large, repeat audiences
• Feasibility/Cost of proposal
• History and Experience of the Organization with similar endeavors

*Please refer to Appendix B of the Cultural Master Plan, Stage 1 Report for a further description of the Story of Buffalo.  The Story was determined by the Cultural Steering Committee led by Chairman Peter Dow.

ECHDC reserves the right to make any and all decisions regarding the selection of proposals submitted, as well as the capacity to consider proposals received after the deadline.

Available Funds

The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation has not yet determined the funding level for implementing short-term proposals that are selected.  However, it is expected that funds will be committed and awarded to selected organizations to provide activities, programming, events, and/or festivals between July 1, 2011 and September 5, 2011.  A portion of this funding will also be used to provide activities, programming, events, and/or festivals from October 15-23, 2011 in recognition of the 2011 National Preservation Conference.

It is unclear at this point how much money will be available to implement Phase 2 and/or Phase 3 proposals.  The amount of funding and source will be determined, in part, based upon the proposals received.

I saw this ad in today's paper, on page A3:

http://www.thedistillerydistrict.com/

44 historic buildings, 13 acres, brick lined pedestrian streets, plus a ton of things to do. We can top that if we really wanted to.

You know I always have seen it on maps, but never thought to check it out. Thanks!

We can why isn't the developer of this project on the board for canal side? developments happen like this all over the world. We shouldn't reinvent the wheel, just tweak it to make it for buffalo.

Looks like Tim Tielman is now weighing in on the HSBC decision. He doesn't want them to move near the waterfront. He'll probably sue the bank and then complain when they relocate to Chicago.

and they should be able to decide what they want to do, move, rebuild or stay. The city has no business directing them.

tielman will not send HSBC to Chicago but don't whine when they join the financial cluster in Cross point. Note the larhe 3 story building going up there. Not necessarily for HSBC.

i'm tired of seeing tielman blamed for "everything i resent about buffalo." it borders on libel, and if you or bro get sued for perpetuating libel, you deserve it.

some facts:

1. tim tielman has never sued anyone in his life. if you can find him as an individual plaintiff in any case, post it here.

2. the preservation coalition and campaign for buffalo have filed suit. this means that their boards had to be persuaded that a lawsuit was worth the risk and expense. if the boards thought the cases were frivolous or too risky, no suits would have been filed. if you disagree with the suits, blame the organizations.

3. campaign & the coalition have never once sued a private individual, business, or corporation. if you can find evidence to the contrary, post it here.

4. campaign & the coalition have sued government and no one else. maybe you think albany and washington are infallible but i think citizens need to apply the brakes now and then and that is why we have a court system.

5. apparently the courts agreed with me because none of campaign's or the coalition's lawsuits were dismissed as frivolous or without merit. in fact, i think they won each one.

6. now, y'all can keep b-tching about whatever annoys you; it is one of our favorite indoor sports and i wouldn't dream of depriving anyone of it. just quit libeling tielman.

I know Tim and he can be difficult at times but his heart is in the right place. He takes a lot of heat because he challeges the short sighted and self serving agenda that has dominated developement in WNY for the past 50 years.

Well said Grad94! Tim Tielman is consistently the voice of reason who has been fighting for the rights of the common people. We need more "Tim Tielman" types in Buffalo to counteract the bullying and myopia of local developers and business owners.
