Buy into Buffalo: Local Music @ Spiral Scratch Records

Buy into Buffalo: Local Music @ Spiral Scratch Records
When the holiday season has come and gone, and the gifts have been bought and opened, will you feel good that you supported the local artists? So many times, when we think of gifts that are made right here in Buffalo, we tend to overlook the musicians who also need to make a few bucks. That's why I'm sending you over to Spiral Scratch Records in order to pick up some locally made music. I stopped in on Friday to talk to owner David Palumbo who gave me the short-list of bands and their CDs, vinyl and even tapes.

We must not forget about the music lovers when we're shopping this season. In no particular order, here are just a few band choices that David picked out for BRO readers - local labels as well (Feral Kid Records, One Percent Press, Peter Walkee Records). Be sure to stop in, and David will help to guide you toward the perfect picks for friends and family.

1) Everything Falls Apart (LP)
2) Patrons of Sweet (CD)
3) Iceberg (CD)
4) Mayday (7")
5) Chosen Ones (7")
6) White Whale (7")
7) Coworkers | Inerds (7")
8) Brown Sugar (Cassette)

I think an itty-bitty tear just rolled out of my dirty little eye . . . I had no idea this place existed. Home of the Hits and New World Records, two places that played a major role in my youth, closed while I was living in another city. Every time my wife and I came home to visit my family we made it a point to go to HotH or New World . . . then the music died.

When we were finally able to move back, the first thing I did was ask around about independent shops like this . . . and no one seemed to know what I was asking about or for (those damn young’uns and their new fangled mp3 whatchamacallits) – the best they could do was point me to Record Theatre on Main and Lafayette (a place I started going to with my father in ‘78).

Thanks for opening my eyes to Spiral Scratch Records!

I will, no, MUST, go visit this place ASAP!

Mayday! rules... also highly recommend that Co-Workers / Inerds split.

Spiral Scratch is truly the rose that grew out of the destruction of Buffalo's independent record stores. Being an underground musician himself (see his awesome! hardcore surf punk band Plates), Dave Palumbo is the perfect guy to be selling records on Elmwood.
