Shish Kabab Express

Shish Kabab Express
I think that I may have just found the best hummus in Buffalo. Did you know that the first urban Iraqi restaurant has opened on Hertel Avenue? I ate there moments ago and found the Iraqi/Middle Eastern offerings to be the perfect thing to satisfy my craving for something light and delicious. Shish Kabab Express (SKE) opened a few weeks ago, and you know what gave away that the place was going to be good? The only customers that I have seen inside the eatery look to be from Middle Eastern descent. With the growing number of Iraqi people living in the area, there seems to be no lack of support for a restaurant that many more people will hopefully try.

To start, the hummus was so creamy that the chef must have de-skinned the chickpeas. Then a small pool of oil was poured on top that gave the hummus the appearance of golden honey. When I picked up the pita and found that it was toasty warm, yet soft to the touch, I knew that the restaurant was going to be good. I also found that my main lunch dish, the falafel wrap was manageable to eat, light enough to continue on with my day and packed with all sorts of interesting flavors. I was taken aback when I bit into something that tasted like a pickle... as I examined the wrap I confirmed that it was indeed a pickle. Surprisingly the taste worked well with the combination of other flavors, but I still had to ask the chef if that was a authentic ingredient. He told me that it was, and I walked back to my table wondering what else was inside the concoction that I was not aware of.

I have heard that the SKE has superb shawarma - there are photos of all dining options on the menu, which makes the decision of what to order even harder. The fattoush looks yummy, as does the baba ganoush... I think I'll try that next time. My only complaint was that there were only cans of soda (pop) inside the cooler when I really could have gone for an authentic Iraqi drink to go along with my meal. Maybe that's coming? Shish Kabab Express offers both sit-down and take-out options, though I would suggest that you order to sit down so that you can appreciate the warm selections as they are prepared for you. The restaurant also has a couple of menu selections for the picky kids - chicken wings, cheese burger and fries. That means that an indecisive family can still all be happy when heading out to Hertel to eat.

You're a moron. I take you as one of those people who must think that Hertel is dead. Ever been there on a weekend? You can't find a parking spot. Ugh, I hate you.

I went there on opening day, it was really busy, granted 50% off that day drew a crowd. people were walking out with bags of food. I ordered the Lamb Shwarma and Falafel wrap. Both were good.

@ Queenseyes, If you want a unique drink try some Vimto, you can buy it at the Mecca Market across the street from this place. It is similar to loganberry but with some added spice.

What happened to Christa Seychew? Why are there no more posts from Nelson Starr in the "food" section? Or just another case of BRO China-style operating policies? (i.e. ignore what they don't like, report one side of the story, censor comments, block commenters for 30 days, etc.)

It's just a fun blog, not the New York Times. Newell took a trip down Hertel the other day and wrote a few articles about the new shops and restaurants he visited. Hardly seems to justify a big conspiracy theory.

Looks like she has jumped ship. http://www.buffalospree.com/Blogs/Consuming-Passions/Annual-2010/Blue-Monk/ As for Nelson I wonder what ever happened to part two and three of the three part series?

No funny business, here kids. I've just made a move to a different opportunity for me.

Nelson has had some health issues and major surgery. I'm sure he'll be back when he has recovered so that you can all taunt him some more. ;-)

You can always come over and harass me on spree blog, bhorvath. I know you miss me.

Congratulations on the move. I shall leave you in peace though. I just was curious since there was a long lull here.

Ate there tonite. The sandwiches are a great deal. Falafel was pretty darn good. Nice addition to Buffalo's "little greater Middle East", I mean Italy.

Been in a few time, its quickly become one of my favorite stops for takeout. Excellent bread and hummus, and the Shwarma is quite tasty.

I would like to echo the praise for this place. I've been there 4 times now since they've opened. Sampled most of the starters, Falafel, Shwarma and Shish kabob sandwiches. All have been excellent. The highlight for me is the Iraqi bread you can get with the apps. You need to specify that you want it instead of pita, but it is sriously delicious. They may need to raise their prices a little to stay afloat. It is more than affordable. Most sandwiches are $3.50 and starts are $3.00 with pita. You can feed two people for about 10 bucks! Will definitely be back for more!

I went there too and had kabob it was good. I wanna try the Shwarma next. Watching those slivers of meat being cut and smell yummy. Its nice to see something different on Hertel. Also I noticed across the street there is Cafe Capitano near Caruso. One think that bothers me is how they try to market Hertel as a "Little Italy" is far from it and never was. The real Little Italy's are College St in Toronto and St Clair Corso italia. My family came from Italy and the population was more was on Seneca st hamburg St area. Sicilians west side.I live off Hertel when I was young too and there were lots of Jewish people too. I would love to see the Jewish delis come back.

Buffalo has few opportunities for writers that are viable and capable of sustaining a family. We are all just doing the best we can to do good work and make a living.

Shocking, I know.

As a freelancer I have written about food, farms and restaurants for over two dozen periodicals, websites and books in 2010. Maybe you don't understand how that works.

Either way, it's nice to know you all miss me.

Just came from the restaurant. Ordered some water, told they have no tap water, sold us a bottle of water, ordered our meal asked if rice comes with it and told they ran out of rice, yet they were serving it to other customers as they came in for take out orders, (coincidental they too were middle eastern)??, kind of ugly to infer maybe we were treated differently because of our race!! Also told they ran out of lamb. Yes Humus was good, however we won't go back there. Bylbose om Campbell Blvd much classier and service was much better.
Perhaps another fly by night attempt to call yourself a Quality Restaurant, I don't think sooooo........

"...kind of ugly to infer maybe we were treated differently because of our race!!..."

Yes, that is an ugly inference, and it says more about the racist fool making it than about anything else. With a little imagination, you might be able to think of several other explanations for such a simple misunderstanding.

My falafel dinner at SKE this evening was the best I've had in Buffalo and my friend's chicken shawarma was also great. The portions were so large that I'll probably downgrade to a sandwich next time.

I'm still uncertain how I feel about this place after two visits. The food that I've had (chicken shawirma wrap and hummus appetizer the first time, and falafel sandwich takeout the second time) was very tasty, but the wait for orders to be filled the first time was a little long, and REALLY long for the second (over 30 minutes for a sandwich at a takeout place is a little long when I didn't have a seat to wait in). The kitchen seemed to be more than a little disorganized the second time I went -- they lost a few orders, and did not have money available to make change for several customers. They also have a problem with being out of key ingredients very early in the day -- having no beef, chicken, or lamb at a kebab place circa 5:00 in the evening is a recipe for disaster! Like I said, the food was good, though.
