Memorial Planting Honors Most Decorated Soldier

Memorial Planting Honors Most Decorated Soldier

The world's most decorated soldier will be honored with a tree planting ceremony along Memorial Drive tomorrow, November 6, 2010 at 1 PM.  Matt Urban won what is believed to be the most military medals ever bestowed on a combat soldier.  The Guinness Book of World Records has recently honored this achievement.

The eight trees planted will represent the Medal of Honor and seven Purple Hearts that the soldier earned during his six years Urban served in the United States Army.  The total number of medals he racked-up during World War II numbered 29.

Matt Urbanowicz grew up in the East Buffalo area in the shadow of the Central Terminal.  He will be honored with a plaque from Re-Tree WNY.

Mr. & Mrs. Norm Skulski and Councilman David Franczyk have organized a program that includes recording artists singing patriotic songs, Boy Scouts, and a number of area guests of honor that will provide commentary on Lt. Colonel Urban's life and military service.  The program is free and the public is encouraged to participate this Saturday.  Guests are asked to gather on Memorial Drive in front of the Central Terminal.

The ceremony will conclude with the tree planting by volunteers of Re-Tree WNY.  This Saturday is the final fall planting day for all of the hundreds of Re-Tree WNY reforesting the city and suburbs.  An additional 1,500 trees are being planted with dozens of block clubs, church groups, student organizations, and schools.
