To continue on with the BRO Hertel series that was never really intended to be a Hertel series (it's just that there's a lot of activity on the street these days), we're heading into BABYroom. The store, adjoining Modern Nostalgia, has a super contemporary feel to it considering it's geared towards babies. If you find yourself shopping at BABYroom, then you'll find that you're browsing through some very hip and trendy items, including miniature Eames chairs. Not being exactly in the baby loop, I was surprised to discover that there are actually some 'neat' things to buy for baby Buffalonians.

Gone are the days of goofy looking oak cribs. Today's streamlined cribs with patterned deco prints look as if they were designed to be featured in Dwell Magazine. Then there are the baby's legwarmers for the little ladies and Diaper Dudes for their fashion-conscious dads. I had a bit of trouble figuring out what the sleepsacks were for, but thanks to the guidance of store manager Heidi Hyla (who showed me how they worked), I suddenly realized how lucky today's babies actually are - it's kinda like having your own personal cocoon! Mix in some stuffed animals (not your regular Fidos I might ad), puzzles, books, bath care products and blankets, and I'd say that parents have a lot to look forward to when it comes to outfitting their mini-mes.

Just for you new parents reading this -

theres also a new baby clothes/paraphernalia shop in the North Park Theatre block. I believe its mostly (all?) consignment.

Just in time for Christmas! Can't wait to go check it out! Also, thank god the store signs are finally getting nice! These 2 blocks have usually done well with store appearances, but theres far too many shops down the street that have those crap plastic "buy your minutes" here! type of signs, it instantly makes the places look ghetto. I wish Hertel would enact a sign regulation like Elmwood did.

The Elmwood Village businesses got a lot help with their signage and facades didn't they? I thought Forever Elmwood (at the time) and Hoyt landed grants and matching funds for facade/sign improvements. It would be helpful if Hoyt and LoCutro could do the same for Hertel. It's tough having both commercial districts in the same political district because they have to fight for the same dollars and attention.

Newell is obviously making this stuff up because I was clearly told in the sprawl thread that nobody would ever want to raise a family in the city because the schools are uniformly terrible and there's absolutely no privacy or space in those tiny cramped houses in North Buffalo.

Glad to see that the owners of Baby Room didn't listen to those folks! North Buffalo's a great place to raise a family, and there are lots of babies, toddlers, and kids growing up in this neighborhood and doing just fine!

Yes but we also established in said sprawl thread that North Buffalo is basically suburbia just slightly within the city limits.

North Buffalo is quite densely developed, and highly walkable. It is "sub-urban" compared to older neighborhoods like Allentown or the West Village, but it is not the modern suburbia of East Amherst or Wheatfield that absolutely requires you to drive your own car everywhere you go.

I think if modern suburbs were constructed on the same high-density, low-subsidy model that N Buffalo was built with, you wouldn't hear any complaints of sprawl.

I've witnessed the way a lot of kids and their parents act in North Buffalo, and I plan on moving out of North buffalo once my kid has to go to school.

Like my grandmother used to say "it's not where you live but how you live", raised four good kids here in Black Rock, seems like North Buffalo would be fine.

I seem to remember that when 'room' was making the initial move to Hertel, we were told that 'baby room' would remain on Elmwood... something about being committed to the street blah blah blah.. now there's just an empty store front whose facade has been altered to suit 'room' and 'baby room' only. WTF guys?

about that headline: bringing up a baby and shopping for a baby are hardly the same thing! one of them is society's hardest job and the other is merely consumerism.
