But we can agree on one thing - getting a present is cool. It drives the loons in line at twilight to get the latest Wii Tickle Me Rock Band, and it has inspired The Good Neighborhood and some of our funkiest friends to throw the Black Friday Funkout this Friday at Mohawk Place, featuring a tryptophantastic trio of Buffalo's freshest funk and a gift drive for kids at Buffalo City Mission's Cornerstone Manor Women and Children's Shelter, an emergency shelter for homeless and abused single women and their children - kids who could use the good feeling of getting a gift that might only come from the good will of a Good Neighbor.
The Black Friday Funkout is headlined by the wall-shakin', saxophone-blowin', keyboard-plunkin', soul-singin' styles of the mighty Eric Crittenden, who in the spirit of the season has assembled a "Family Reunion" band to deliver his funk-fortified brand of Rust Bowl Soul. Critt will be preceded by Buffalo's premier progenitors of prog-funk, Peanut Brittle Satellite; and the slanky soul and straight baby-makin' music of Vitamin D.
Our mission is simple - get down, and give back. The gifts we collect will go straight to the Buffalo City Mission, which describes Cornerstone Manor as "a welcome relief from the uncertainties and fear homeless women and families face. For many, it's the closest thing to home."
Aiding our cause and sharing the spotlight will be representatives from the Buffalo and Erie County Librarians Association, who are rallying their troops to donate children's books at the event, and using the platform to promote the flash mob they're planning for Saturday afternoon to combat the crippling proposed county budget cuts.
We hope to see a big crowd of cavortin' ex-pats, rowdy librarians, and funky bohemians gathering at the 'Hawk for a throwdown we hope will become an annual. Y'all come!
