2nd Annual Winter Bike Workshop

2nd Annual Winter Bike Workshop
Winter is around the corner, is your bike ready for the sleet, snow, ice and salt? If you answered no, then the place you need to be is the Green Options Buffalo Winter Bike Workshop!

For anyone who has wanted to bike in the snow, Green Options Buffalo has dreamed up a workshop that is geared towards the winter cyclist. Our awesome instructors will be available to help you refurbish a used bicycle and customize it for use during the winter. You can expect to gain hands-on experience in building and maintaining your winter bike, as well as a few safety tips from our veterans. It's also a chance to hang out with people whom you might otherwise think of as insane... the bike riders who are fearless when it comes to cold temperatures and ice caked roads. But... if you're gonna get into the recreation when the snow flies, then you better be prepared for what's in store.

Winterize your own bike or select one of our fine bicycles to fix up for yourself. The workshop will consist of two sessions at our Community Workshop (98 Colvin Ave.) No prior knowledge is needed, experienced mechanics, supplies, tools and bikes will be provided. If interested, RSVP by November 13th.

When: Sunday Nov. 14th 12pm-4pm & Wednesday Nov. 17th 7pm-10pm

Where: Green Option Buffalo Community Workshop
98 Colvin Ave, Buffalo, NY (In the old 17th Precinct Police Station)

Cost: $40 (includes cost of bicycle that you take home)

How: E-mail Stacy@GreenOptionsBuffalo.org to reserve your spot.

Strikes me as a good idea. One of the things that I find astonishing about Minneapolis/St. Paul is the sheer volume of bicyclists on the road in the winter... snow and ice be damned.

These sites talk about it a little:

I ride year round. People write off winter cyclists as crazy, but we accept skiing and snowboarding without that stigma. If you dress similarly warm to how you would to go skiing/snowboarding, you won't have any problems.

My tips:

Coaster Brakes/Fixie (brake cables ice up in winter sometimes)
Fenders (you want the slush on the road, not your pants)
Tires - Thin to cut down to pavement, tread to grip the road

You'll probably also want to be mindful of how often you're lubricating your chain and that the grease in your headset, bottom bracket and hubs doesn't wash out with the slush-water.

It's not as big of a to-do as you think, though.

Happy riding!

I rode to work year round for 10 years, the only time I drove was when the temp went down to single digits or heavy snow made visibility poor. I agree with your take on equipment, My road bike had fenders and snow tires that I got from Nashbar and unless the snow was really deep I never had a problem. I did notice the salt was tough on aluminum components but otherwise the bike held up fine. With my present job I am not able to ride anymore and I really miss it.

As for KarlMalone and his 4x4, that's just lame, never owned a four wheel drive and never had a problem. SUV's are so oversold as a necessity when it reality they are just a crutch for those that never learned to drive. The marketing as an off road vehicle is comical since the closest most drivers ever come to "off road" is the gravel parking lot at the beer store.

Now living in Mpls, "2nd most bike-friendly US city", I too ride my bike much of the winter.

However, important 'insurance' here is the presence of bike racks on all buses (& the light rail) . . . as in Portland OR, "#1 most bike-friendly city".

Has there been progress in Bflo getting bike racks on buses, an essential component of making Bflo 'most bike-friendly NE city'?

Extra wide grille? And its on the front as opposed to those rear grilles? You should be real proud. Not for making threats, not for driving a truck. But for knowing that a grille is on the front, and for opting for the extra wide grill! Will you post a picture of your sweet ride for us?
