Buffalo: This Place Matters (Video)

 Buffalo: This Place Matters (Video)

WOW checkout this gorgeous video clip showing Buffalo in its best light.  It was co-sponsored by Preservation Buffalo Niagara and produced by Visit Buffalo Niagara an arm of the Buffalo Niagara Convention Bureau.   It was created to lure participants to the National Trust Convention taking place here next October.

The imagery is absolutely beautiful - stunning!  It does not need any accompanying blabber by me.  Watch the video.

Video produced by filmmaker John Paget

Sweet. I know some of you will say it is candy coated but I like candy every now and again.

This short was produced by Buffalo based filmaker John Paget & his crew - http://www.pagetfilms.com/ - and debuted at last week's John Norquist event at the Burchfield Penny where John Paget did receive credit for this.

Looks great! The video has some inspiring shots of the city. Also, for a short promotional piece, they did a great job of getting intelligent people to make intelligent remarks about Buffalo.

Aside: The trolls and malcontents will hate this, either because it doesn't show "reality" or because it panders to the BRO crowd/preservationists/other categories of effete boogeymen. Here's a thought, though. Perhaps what Buffalo needs is more preservationists - who either visit or move here from other cities and states. Because, other than people attracted to Buffalo for its existing assets, I'm not sure who else is moving here.

I am not sure what "effete boogeymen" means, but your sentiment is spot on: people will visit Buffalo for, primarily, two reasons, our art and architecture.

Which is why it is critical that we NOT slash the arts (Collins), and not tear down or kill by neglect any more significant buildings in Buffalo. The gentleman from PUSH is absolutely right-this IS our defining moment to "create magic." We have been fortunate in that we were not wealthier and did not demolish more of Buffalo's architectural authenticity. Let's use it to our advantage.

we sure regret a lot of demolitions, but no one ever regrets preserving a building.

Candy coated fluff. Beautifuly done but maybe if he walked the camera instead of airborn shots reality of this filthy city would show up. I really loved the time lapse pictures so as not to show the lack of people downtown, well done!

He does have a point. The video was done very well and it is promotional so I wouldn't expect to see trash floating around.

The one comment in the video that stuck out at me as a lie was when the guy (in sheas)said "you don't go to Buffalo and look at things that were once wonderful and aren't anymore, they are still wonderful."

Unfortnately there are quite a few buildings that are not in a shape that the city should be proud of.

Great video. As non resident living in Toronto, Buffalo is a great visit; exploring the
Rich authentic grandeur of a time passed kinda of
Like the
Movie "
The
Magnificent Ambersons" but what is equally exciting is the rebirth of the neighborhoods and the gradual spreading of this renaissance . Buffalo really has this essence not seen even in overbuilt
Congested newby Toronto

To the cynics out there -- Of course it shows Buffalo in the "best light", that's the intention -- it's a promotional piece. We need to do this more often because no one else will(think national media). If you want to change attitudes, you have to change the conversation.

As an ex-pat returned, (lived in 4 countries and 13 states), I've come to truly appreciate what the city has to offer. Where people see hardship, I see opportunity. Certainly Buffalo has its fair share of problems; what city doesn't? These challenges are not a show-stopper, it's just part of the process.

As a group, we can look back to what was and mourn what has passed; or we can look forward to what the city can become. The opportunity to build on an extraordinary foundation and create a truly unique urban space is at hand. Cynicism is not entirely misplaced, but it needs to be tempered with optimism and action.

Cool! Over the weekend I saw a documentary on Dish Network from 2004 or 05 on Alcatraz prisioners...then at the end I watched the credits and discovered that it was made by John Paget and music by Nelson Starr.

It's a beautiful piece. It may not be the only reality, but everything it shows is real, and it's something we need to see. Thank you for doing it.

For all you cynics out there, you should thank your lucky stars so much of your architecture was left intact and that you have a great foundation to build on. For those of us who remember the great days of Detroit, it's tragic that all we have in that city is huge areas of destruction and decay. There's no foundation. We have to completely reinvent ourselves and the resources are scarce. Instead of sniping and complaining, why don't you roll up your sleeves (or open your checkbooks) and make sure the streets are clean and give the visionaries a hand. I live in a little town in Rhode Island where the preservationist tradition is strong and well and nobody whines about how futile everything is. It isn't.
