There's a nice salute to Buffalo from Chris Churchill in Albany's Times-Union (posted on October 3, 2010). Although the piece leads with images of snowy landscape and long lost industry, it takes a sudden turn in order to dispel what many readers assume Buffalo must be like. He even goes so far as to add that our industrial heritage is one of our assets - it helps to keep the city real while offering a place that is affordable and diverse. Here are a couple of snippets from the article:

"Actually, these just might be the liveliest and hippest urban neighborhoods in all of upstate New York."

"The regional decline is well-hidden in Elmwood Village and other north-of-downtown neighborhoods. In a strange way, it might even add to their pizzazz, helping to keep chain stores at bay while making the area affordable for the students, artists and musicians who give the place character."

"It even still has economic might, despite the derelict factories that greeted us on our way into town: Urban theorist Richard Florida notes that the Toronto-Buffalo-Rochester mega-region is the world's 12th biggest for economic output."

In your face, Utica!!!!

Oh wait... he said 'might be'.

Kidding aside, it's a well balanced article. Many BR commenters will be glad to see the reporter praised Pano's and the view of Lake Erie from elevated Route 5.

its always nice when outsiders discover all the great stuff we love about buffalo, but why oh why do they always have to confirm every stereotype that the reader already has before paying us a compliment?

It's not a stereotype if it's true. Buffalo as seen from the 190 between the 90 and downtown is absolutely dismal. It does get hit with a lot of snow. The economy is struggling, and has been for half a century.

At least they didn't break out the usual comments about rabid blue-collar ethnic Bills fans.

Otherwise, it was a complementary article about a city in upstate New York even those from Syracuse and Rochester aren't very familiar with. Sheesh. I swear, Buffalonians have the most easily bruised sense of civic price ...

Downvote, because it's 180° from the hive mind.
